What does a project engineer manager do?

A Project Engineer Manager oversees engineering projects from conception to completion, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. They coordinate between various engineering teams, manage project schedules, allocate resources, and communicate with clients and stakeholders. Their responsibilities also include resolving technical issues, ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards, and reporting on project progress. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and organizational skills.

How does a project engineer manager typically balance technical oversight with team leadership responsibilities?

A Project Engineer Manager is often responsible for both guiding the technical aspects of projects and leading a multidisciplinary team. This balance involves setting clear technical goals, reviewing engineering solutions, and ensuring project milestones are met, while also facilitating communication, mentoring team members, and resolving conflicts. Effective managers schedule regular check-ins, delegate tasks according to team strengths, and foster a collaborative environment to keep projects on track. By combining technical expertise with strong people management skills, they ensure both project success and team development.

Working closely with Project Managers, senior engineers, multidisciplinary teams, external stakeholders, and clients, this role serves as a primary technical point of contact to develop engineering deliverables, coordinate technical activities, and ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable industry standards, utility requirements, and project objectives. Project Execution & Construction Support

  • Support all phases of project execution from planning through commissioning, including scope development, schedule coordination, cost input, and tracking of engineering deliverables.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, design changes, and field modifications, and provide engineering support during construction to resolve technical issues and clarify design intent.
  • Conduct site visits, field walkdowns, technical reviews, and support testing, start-up, and commissioning activities for substations, distribution, SCADA, automation, microgrid and related infrastructure.

Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers, internal departments, and multidisciplinary teams to align engineering activities with project scope, budget, schedule, and client requirements.
  • Interface with clients, utilities, EPC firms, vendors, equipment manufacturers, and contractors to support design integration, procurement, and project execution.
  • Support procurement activities by preparing technical equipment specifications, reviewing vendor submittals and drawings, participating in bid evaluations, and assisting with equipment selection.

Compliance, Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure designs and engineering deliverables comply with applicable utility requirements, client standards, and industry codes and standards, including IEEE, NEC, NESC, and other relevant regulations.
  • Participate in design reviews, QA/QC processes, technical audits, and continuous improvement efforts to maintain quality, reliability, and consistency across projects.
  • Promote a strong safety culture in design and execution by prioritizing safe, reliable, and maintainable infrastructure solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
