Description

Project Engineer IV is a position within the Distribution Department to lead the design of complex distribution projects. Candidates are expected to perform a variety of complex tasks, delegating and reviewing routine tasks of Project Engineers as well as Engineering Technicians. Responsibilities include providing technical oversight, subject matter expertise, and overall project leadership. Candidates should be capable of operating with minimal supervision.

Requirements

- Lead the design of complex distribution projects between 4kV and 35kV from concept through final design, ensuring project requirements defined by project managers are met.

- Review various distribution calculations, such as pole loading, cable pulling, voltage drop, transformer and conductor sizing, and protective device coordination.

- Calculate and determine appropriate electrical clearances in accordance with the NESC, NEC, various utility standards, and other applicable codes.

- Lead the design of various projects such as voltage conversions, subdivision layouts, feeder reconductors, and new circuit additions for overhead, URD, and duct bank systems.

- Support and contribute to a company-wide safety culture by following established safety standards, policies, and best practices, helping to ensure a safe environment for employees, clients, and the public. 

- Contribute to project planning activities, including schedule development, scope definition, budgeting, staffing, and construction planning; manage and track design-related change orders.

- Utilize advanced knowledge of transmission engineering principles, practices, codes, and industry standards to support project execution.

- Apply professional judgment and experience to complex or unique project challenges, developing practical and non-standard design solutions when required.

- Perform quality reviews of production drawings and project data to ensure accuracy and compliance, using multiple CAD and design software platforms.

- Support construction administration through technical reviews, coordination with field staff, resolution of installation issues, field inspections, calculations, and system testing.

- Lead or support field inspections, installation verification, measurements, and calculations for public and private sector clients.

- Prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations for clients and, when appropriate, industry publications or forums.

- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with clients, customers, and contractors, ensuring project expectations and satisfaction objectives are achieved.

- Develop detailed cost proposals, qualification packages, project budgets, and engineering cost estimates; monitor and report on project financial performance.

- Provide technical leadership within the distribution engineering practice, offering guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.

- Ensure adherence to established QA/QC processes throughout project execution.

- Maintain effective coordination and communication with other engineering disciplines.

- Uphold company and site-specific safety requirements and promote safe engineering and field practices.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Expert knowledge of permitting, easement, and right-of-way requirements.


Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year program.

- 8+ years of applicable experience required.

- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.

- Excellent project management skills and ability to meet deliverables on time and on budget. Experience with Microsoft Project software is preferred.

- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with multiple priorities and schedules throughout the project life cycle.

- Experience interacting with technical and non-technical persons in a client-consultant setting.

- Strong attention to detail, organization, and management of personnel.

- Mastery of standard engineering techniques and procedures related to distribution.

- Proficient in understanding of transmission and substation functions.

- Ability to travel.
