Position Overview

The Engineer I position is an entry-level engineering role responsible for applying engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications to support the design and construction of power-related systems.

This role supports project estimation, design development, contractor oversight, and construction documentation while ensuring alignment with Southern Company design standards and industry requirements. The Engineer I will work closely with internal departments and contractors to support planning, design, construction, and maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design Support

  • Apply engineering processes and design criteria to develop power system solutions
  • Support estimate preparation and develop design options
  • Prepare construction specifications and transmit construction packages
  • Utilize discipline-specific software applications used in system design
  • Support development and maintenance of design standards and criteria

Contractor Oversight & Quality Assurance

  • Provide guidance and oversight to approved contractors
  • Review contractor-developed design solutions, cost estimates, and construction packages
  • Perform quality assurance reviews to ensure compliance with company standards

Field & Documentation Support

  • Pull mechanical and electrical drawings from drawing repository
  • Conduct field walkdowns and mark up drawings for updates
  • Sketch system P&IDs for missing drawings and components
  • Assign drawing asset/component numbers per company standards
  • Develop naming spreadsheets for system components and assets
  • Install physical asset tags as required
  • Track project progress and provide status updates

Operations & Cross-Functional Support

  • Support construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations
  • Understand planning, design, operation, construction, and maintenance processes
  • Collaborate with internal departments involved in system lifecycle management
  • Estimate materials required for projects

Safety & Compliance

  • Create and maintain a safe work environment by putting safety first
  • Ensure designs comply with industry and Southern Company standards

Required Qualifications

  • 0–5 years of related engineering experience
  • Accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Introductory engineering knowledge
  • Basic understanding of discipline-specific design software
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to make limited independent decisions under supervision
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Ability to build effective relationships with plant staff, engineering teams, and vendors
