What is a project engineer contract?

A Project Engineer Contract refers to a temporary or fixed-term position where an engineer is hired to oversee and coordinate specific projects, often in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or engineering services. The contract outlines the duration, responsibilities, and expectations for the project engineer, who ensures that project objectives are met on time, within budget, and according to technical standards. This role typically involves planning, technical problem-solving, liaising between teams, and monitoring project progress. Contract positions offer flexibility for both employers and engineers, often focusing on specialized skills for particular projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project engineer contract?

To thrive as a Project Engineer Contract, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree, often supplemented by PMP or similar certifications. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and contract administration systems is essential. Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills help you coordinate stakeholders and manage contractual obligations effectively. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the required specifications.

What are the typical challenges faced by project engineers working on contract assignments?

Project Engineers on contract assignments often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new teams and company processes, managing multiple projects with tight deadlines, and integrating into ongoing initiatives mid-cycle. Since contract roles can vary in duration and scope, it’s important to be proactive in communication and flexible in work style. Building strong relationships with both internal teams and external stakeholders is key to delivering project objectives efficiently and positioning yourself for potential extensions or future opportunities.

We execute complex projects with precision, and we expect the same discipline, organization, and attention to detail internally. Our teams are highly proficient professionals who take pride in delivering exceptional outcomes — on every project, every time.

As we scale, we are strengthening our internal operations and leadership structure to support the next phase of growth. This is not about filling seats. It is about building a company that operates with clarity, ownership, and high standards at every level.

Our Core Values: Communication, Growth, Inclusion, Philanthropy, Quality, Transparency.

If you thrive in a high‑expectation, high‑accountability environment, you’ll find meaningful opportunity here.

About the Role

The Project Engineer / Project Coordinator plays a critical role in supporting the successful delivery of commercial construction projects across Modern Construction Services’ growing portfolio. This position blends technical project coordination with hands-on financial process management, ensuring that every project moves forward with accuracy, organization, and commercial clarity.

You will work closely with Project Managers to manage documentation, track submittals, support contract administration, and maintain accurate financial data within Procore. Your work directly impacts project performance, client satisfaction, and internal decision-making. As you grow in the role, you’ll gain exposure to higher-level project management responsibilities and have a clear path toward expanded ownership.

This is an individual contributor role based in Charlotte, NC. On-site presence is required during onboarding; hybrid flexibility may be available after demonstrated performance.

Key Responsibilities

Project Coordination & Documentation

• Review architectural and engineering drawings and specifications

• Build and maintain the contract item list — all items requiring submittal for architect or engineer approval

• Manage submittal logs, RFI logs, and change order logs throughout the project lifecycle

• Issue subcontractor contracts using established templates at project kickoff

• Support scheduling updates and coordination between field and office teams

• Maintain accurate project records and workflows in Procore

Project Financial Management

• Enter and maintain project financial data within Procore’s financial management module, including subcontractor costs, bid amounts, and project margins

• Manage the pay application process in coordination with Project Managers

• Process change orders and update financial records accordingly

• Prepare and distribute monthly project financial reports for management review

Collaboration

• Work closely with Project Managers, General Superintendents, Estimators, and Accounting

• Serve as a key point of contact for architects, engineers, clients, and subcontractors on document and submittal status

• Support cross-functional communication to keep projects aligned and moving

Requirements

• 5+ years of commercial construction experience

• Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale commercial projects

• Proficiency with Procore, including document management and financial modules

• Experience managing submittals, RFIs, change orders, and pay applications

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and SharePoint

Preferred

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field

• Experience with Sage, Microsoft Project, or similar construction management tools

• Bilingual in Spanish

Training & Growth

• On-site onboarding with full process and systems immersion

• Hands-on exposure to both technical coordination and financial project management workflows

• Hybrid flexibility available after successful onboarding

• Clear path into advanced coordination or project management roles

Physical Requirements

This role operates in a professional office environment and requires the use of standard office equipment. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. may be required.

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
