Job description

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO takes pride in recruiting, developing, and retaining highly talented individuals. Our Co-Op Program provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while developing a deeper understanding of New York's bulk power system, wholesale electricity markets, and emerging grid technologies.

The Research & Engineering team is evaluating Advanced Power Flow Control(APFC) technologies and their representation within NYISO market and power system models. This co-op project will support the assessment of a modular Static Series Synchronous Compensator (SSSC) technology, an innovative transmission control device that can influence power flows by adjusting line impedance.

Working alongside engineers and subject matter experts, the co-op will help analyze whether the device behavior can be effectively represented using existing modeling approaches within the NYISO Business Management System (BMS) framework. The project will provide exposure to transmission modeling, power system operations, and the electricity markets that support reliable grid operations.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Research & Engineering team to understand NYISO transmission modeling practices and the Business Management System (BMS) framework.
  • Assist in the development and execution of simulation scenarios used to evaluate the device's behavior.
  • Support baseline case development and implementation of transmission impedance adjustments in test environments.
  • Execute and analyze SCUC, RTC, and RTD simulation studies.
  • Evaluate impacts on power flows, shift factors, transmission constraints, dispatch outcomes, and market results.
  • Organize project findings, document results, and prepare technical summaries and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Research & Engineering, Market Operations, and Grid Operations staff throughout the project.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning skills.
  • Experience with data analysis, programming, or modeling tools such as Python, MATLAB, Excel, or similar software.
  • Interest in power systems, optimization, grid operations, or electricity markets.
  • Ability to interpret technical information and communicate findings effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Coursework or experience related to power systems, optimization, or energy markets is a plus.

The NYISO offers the flexibility to work both in the office and remotely, providing our employees with an enhanced work-life balance. This co-op position will be a hybrid role, with the expectation that students will be local to the Albany, NY area and be able to work onsite at least three days a week.

All offers of employment will be made contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screening and background check.

The NYISO is an Equal Opportunity Employer and, as such, does not discriminate in its hiring or employment practices.
