Position overview

The Sr. Manager, Packaging Development is a critical leader and member of the Trauma and Extremities Technical Operations LT who has responsibility to lead their team in the design, development, and commercialization of packaging technologies for the entire product's lifecycle - from new product introduction through end of life. This leader will be responsible to develop and build a high performing team who will identify and deploy contemporary, industry leading packaging solutions and best practices to the Trauma & Extremities business which deliver on product design requirements, ensure quality/compliance, meet or exceed cost targets, and delight our customers. This leader will be a key voice in shaping the Product Strategy and CoGS Roadmaps for the business, whose team will be accountable to delivery on critical project deliverables for both new product introductions and lifecycle management.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of seasoned packaging engineering professionals and project managers to deliver excellence.
  • Ownership of packaging development packaging design, development, and commercialization from new product launch through end of life.
  • Synthesize and deploy enterprise packaging strategy aligned with key business partners across R&D, Commercial, Value Stream, New Product Introductions, Operations, Network Strategy, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, and Product Labeling
  • gEnsure strong technical development of team and partnership with critical functions in the development, testing, validation, and commercialization of device packaging solutions for both new and existing products.
  • Lead team in the identification, prioritization, and execution of packaging continuous improvement projects.
  • Ensure packaging validations are completed on time, on budget, and within quality compliance/expectations with third party suppliers, as applicable.
  • Ensure packaging technologies for currently marketed products meet or exceed both internal DePuy Synthes and/or external quality/compliance/environmental standards.
  • Maintain departmental and project budgets and ensure timely capital and expense spend within targets.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in packaging, engineering, quality, operations, or related supply chain discipline required.
  • Experience working in the Medical Device or other regulated industry is preferred.
  • Experience in Package Engineering and packaging supplier selecftion/management is preferred.
  • Past direct people management experience is preferred.
  • The ability to successfully lead and support transformational change across functions involving innovative solutions is required.
  • The ability to lead and/or support multiple project teams simultaneously is required.
  • Experience with Business Excellence and Project Management methodologies is preferred.
  • Knowledge of sterile packaging material characteristics and validation practices is preferred.
  • Past experience in process development and in writing and executing validations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ISO13485, ISO11607, ISTA and ASTM standards and their application to medical devices is preferred.
  • Understanding of statistical analysis is required.
  • Strong financial acumen, including the ability to complete financial analysis for capital purchases, estimate manufacturing costs, estimate component cost is preferred, and support NPV/IRR calculations for investment decisions is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications are required

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes.
