Position Overview

The Business Development Director is responsible for identifying, developing, and advancing strategic growth opportunities across Staker Parson's aggregates, asphalt, ready-mix concrete, construction services, and emerging businesses. The role serves as the market-facing representative of the organization, building executive-level relationships with customers, owners, developers, engineers, contractors, municipalities, utilities, and government agencies.

Working closely with Commercial, Operations, Estimating, Finance, Environmental, and Government Affairs leaders, this role identifies future opportunities, influences project development, and aligns internal resources to secure strategically important work. Success is measured through the quality of opportunities developed, growth of strategic accounts, expansion into new markets, increased market share, and long-term profitability.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Strategic Business Development

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and execute business development strategies aligned with company growth objectives.
  • Build and maintain a rolling three to five-year pipeline of qualified opportunities.
  • Identify emerging markets, infrastructure investments, and industry trends that create growth opportunities.
  • Develop market entry strategies for new geographies, products, and services.
  • Drive long-term business growth across public and private sector markets.

Strategic Account Management

  • Establish and maintain executive-level relationships with key customers and stakeholders.
  • Lead strategic account planning, customer business reviews, and retention initiatives.
  • Develop long-term partnerships with state agencies, municipalities, developers, engineering firms, contractors, utility providers, industrial customers, and federal agencies.
  • Expand market share and share-of-wallet within strategic accounts.

Opportunity Development

  • Lead early engagement efforts on major infrastructure, industrial, energy, residential, commercial, and public works projects.
  • Identify opportunities before procurement activities begin.
  • Understand customer objectives and project drivers.
  • Coordinate cross-functional pursuit strategies and executive engagement.
  • Position Staker Parson as the preferred construction materials and services partner.

Market Intelligence

  • Monitor competitor activity, market conditions, construction trends, and pricing dynamics.
  • Track transportation funding, legislative developments, population growth, and industrial expansion.
  • Assess capital investment activity and emerging market opportunities.
  • Deliver regular market intelligence and business opportunity assessments to executive leadership.

Strategic Pursuits

  • Partner with Commercial and Operations leaders to develop pursuit and capture strategies.
  • Support proposal development, customer presentations, and interview teams.
  • Assist with commercial negotiations and long-term supply agreement development.
  • Coordinate internal resources to maximize strategic win rates.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Commercial, Operations, Estimating, Finance, Environmental, Government Affairs, Safety, Quality, and Human Resources teams.
  • Ensure customer commitments align with operational capabilities and long-term business objectives.
  • Influence stakeholders and drive alignment without direct authority.

  • Demonstrated success developing executive-level customer relationships.
  • Strong understanding of commercial strategy, contract negotiations, and market development.
  • Proven ability to influence and align cross-functional teams without direct authority.

Preferred

  • MBA or advanced business degree.
  • Experience in aggregates, asphalt, ready-mix concrete, heavy civil construction, or infrastructure development.
  • Knowledge of public procurement processes, transportation funding, and major capital project delivery.
