Job description

Remote roles:
This is a fully remote role for candidates who are based outside of the New York Metropolitan area. For those located in the area, we encourage you to consider our hybrid work arrangement (1-2 days a week in our NYC office). That said, we value flexibility and if you have a different preference, please do not let that deter you from applying – let’s talk about it!

Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of any employment‑based visas at this time. (e.g., H-1B, TN, visa transfer, green card sponsorship, etc.)

Energy storage is the key to unlocking a future where our world is powered by renewable resources. At Convergent Energy and Power, our mission is to make the electrical grid cleaner, more reliable, and less expensive by leveraging state‑of‑the‑art energy storage and distributed generation technologies.

The Director, Project Development is the business owner for a portfolio of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development projects and serves as the single point of accountability from commercial award through Financing Ready / Notice to Proceed (NTP).

Working within Convergent’s development standards, underwriting criteria, and approved risk tolerances, this role transforms commercially originated opportunities into financeable, construction‑ready investments. Success requires integrating commercial, technical, financial, regulatory, and stakeholder considerations while directing cross‑functional execution across the organization.

The Project Developer owns project value throughout the development lifecycle. This includes accountability for development budget, integrated schedule, project economics, customer commitments, commercial negotiations, financing readiness, and the successful transition of projects to construction.

The Project Developer exercises independent judgment to balance competing priorities, resolve complex development challenges, preserve investment returns, and deliver projects that satisfy Convergent’s underwriting, design, operating, and financing standards.

This is an individual contributor role and therefore does not have any direct reports but will exercise informal mentorship and guidance to junior‑level staff.

  • Serve as the single point of accountability for assigned projects from commercial handoff through Financing Ready/NTP.
  • Lead and operationally manage cross‑functional pods of subject matter experts to advance each project.
  • Own project outcomes by balancing schedule, budget, risk, customer commitments, technical requirements, and investment returns.
  • Assess commercial, technical, permitting, procurement, schedule, and financial risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Recommend project continuation, hold, restructuring, or termination decisions when conditions materially impact investment objectives.
  • Deliver financeable, construction‑ready projects and ensure complete transition to the PMO.
Development Strategy and Cross‑Functional Leadership (25%)
  • Own integrated development plans and direct cross‑functional execution across Engineering, Land Development, Legal, Procurement, Analytics, and other SMEs as needed.
  • Align priorities, resolve issues, and drive accountability to achieve development milestones.
  • Tightly coordinate with Capital Markets to ensure project delivery is aligned with financing strategy.
Financial Stewardship and Investment Performance (20%)
  • Own the development budget and authorize expenditures within delegated authority.
  • Preserve project economics (IRR and LNPV) while coordinating procurement strategy and informing financing readiness.
  • Maintain each project’s unlevered financial model with support from Analytics.
External Stakeholder and Commercial Management (15%)
  • Lead engagement with customers, landowners, utilities, AHJs, and community stakeholders.
  • Represent Convergent externally and negotiate commercial matters within delegated authority.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience developing renewable energy or BESS projects and bringing them to completion.
  • Strong commercial, financial, project management, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to influence cross‑functional teams without direct authority.
  • Experience managing development budgets, schedules, and project economics.
  • As applicable, this role may involve physical activity, including but not limited to standing, walking, or lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Alignment with Convergent’s mission, values and a strong interest in the Clean Energy Transition.
  • 25% travel expected, primarily for team events and company‑wide meetings.Travel to remote sites may be required, which could involve driving or air travel.
