Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.
- Valid State Driver's License and US Citizenship are required for Unescorted Access to Fort Leonard Wood.
- Ability to successfully pass background investigations to gain access to Army installations, IT systems, and for the issuance of a government issued Common Access Card.
- Successful completion of a four-year undergraduate degree in an environmental discipline or related field from an accredited university. A combination of education and experience may be used in lieu of an accredited four-year undergraduate degree.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) to enter data and manage databases.
- Ability to safely sample and identify aquatic organisms (e.g., fish and freshwater mussels) with taxonomic keys and other aids.
- Ability to safely use basic shop tools (power and hand tools) to maintain equipment (e.g., sampling nets, trailers, and boats) and construct supplies as needed.
- Ability to safely work near and within shallow and deep flowing water.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience driving four-wheel drive vehicles.
- Experience working with imperiled aquatic species (e.g., federally endangered and threatened).
- Experience operating boats, outboard motors, power tools, trailers, and data loggers.
- Experience sampling fish and aquatic organisms using methods such as boat electrofishing, backpack electrofishing, seining, and trap nets.
- Experience in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and databases for the development of supporting environmental analysis.
- Experience in using GIS software such as ArcGIS and Field Maps.
- Ability to gather facts, analyze and compare trends, draw conclusions, devise solutions to problems, and identify changes and trends related to comprehensive planning issues.
- Ability to communicate effectively in formal briefings and in general public meetings, and to prepare clear and concise written materials appropriate for different audiences.
Job Description
The position will support fisheries and aquatic program and stormwater program activities at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. We are seeking a qualified team member that can support the two programs with an emphasis on the fisheries and aquatic program.
This position is located at Ft Leonard Wood, MO. The Fort is located in the beautiful South-Central Missouri Ozarks which has a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities. The Fort covers more than 61,000 acres and is located in Pulaski County, Missouri. Bordering the installation to the north are the towns of Waynesville/St. Robert and Interstate 44. St. Louis is a 2-hour drive to the east along I-44 and Springfield is a little more than an hour's drive to the west of Fort Leonard Wood. The job will involve a wide range of natural resource and environmental compliance projects that support military training and development.
Job Duties
- Perform tasks related to the general support of aquatic conservation, fisheries, and stormwater management.
- Provide support for the Division outreach and training activities, including, but not limited to Youth Fishing Derbies, Earth Day, and the Environmental Quality Control Committee meetings.
- Assist with field work to monitor aquatic fauna and habitat.
- Prepare and maintain equipment including but not limited to boats, trailers, fish sampling gear, and power tools.
- Assist with general tasks to support MS4, Industrial Stormwater, Land Disturbance and Fisheries Programs.
- Collect water samples for various environmental regulatory requirements, prepare sample for shipping and deliver samples to be shipped as needed.
- Work with government approved receiving labs as needed to ship samples and coordinate with the lab to receive sampling bottles.
- Develop and maintain relevant databases for program activities as directed by the Natural Resource and Environmental Program Manager.
- Prepare monthly activities reports.
- Work requires being physically capable of lifting 50 pounds alone, extended walking/hiking on various terrains, strenuous outdoor labor and exposure to flowing water of various depths, potential allergens, plants, wildlife, pests, and all-weather conditions.
- Work requires using various boats, wading and swimming, and snorkeling in flowing water.
- Work requires occasional exposure to loud noises which may require use of hearing protection.
- Periodically, work may be required on weekends or outside of standard work hours (7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.).
