How much do project controllers make in the US?
What are project controls?
What is the difference between Project Controls vs Cost Estimator?
| Aspect | Project Controls | Cost Estimator |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Overall project schedule, budget, risk management, and performance tracking | Estimating project costs, preparing budgets, and analyzing expenses |
| Required Skills | Scheduling, budgeting, risk analysis, project management tools | Cost analysis, quantity takeoffs, pricing, financial modeling |
| Work Environment | Project sites, offices, integrated with project teams | Office-based, often collaborating with project controls and procurement teams |
| Certifications | PMI-SP, PMP, AACE certifications | AACE Certified Cost Estimator, CPC, or similar |
Project Controls and Cost Estimators both play vital roles in project management. While Project Controls oversee the entire project schedule, budget, and risk management, Cost Estimators focus specifically on calculating and analyzing project costs. Understanding their distinct responsibilities helps ensure effective project delivery and financial planning.

- Develop and manage integrated Level 3–5 Primavera P6 schedules across all project phases
- Lead WBS and CBS alignment to support estimating, cost tracking, and progress measurement
- Develop resource-loaded schedules and manpower forecasts
- Perform critical path analysis, float analysis, and schedule scenario modeling
- Build and maintain recovery plans in response to delays, scope changes, or logistics disruptions

- Establish realistic schedule logic aligned with scope, resources, and project execution strategy
- Field Execution
- Maintain and drive the schedule in alignment with field progress and site conditions
- Interface with engineering, procurement, fabrication, and field teams to ensure schedule alignment

- North Slope & Arctic Logistics
- Develop schedules that account for modular fabrication workflows — yard integration, transport, and field setting
- Plan and sequence work around sealift schedules, including module delivery, bulk material shipments, and critical equipment arrival
- Incorporate ice road logistics, including haul windows, load restrictions, and material staging strategies
- Build schedules that reflect seasonal constraints, including winter construction windows and limited summer access
- Develop contingency plans for logistics-driven delays due to weather, transport, or material slippage
- System Turnover & Commissioning
- Integrate system-based turnover sequencing into the construction schedule — not area-based completion
- Align schedule milestones with mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, and commissioning handover
- Ensure construction activities are sequenced to support efficient, risk-managed system turnover
- Coordinate handover sequencing with client priorities and operations readiness requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned
- 10+ years of scheduling experience in industrial construction
- Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6
- Proven experience planning and executing $100MM+ projects
