Position Summary

The Quality Control Manager is responsible for leading and maintaining the company’s quality control program for custom metal fabrication and pressure-vessel manufacturing. This role ensures fabricated products, welding activities, inspections, testing, documentation, and final releases meet applicable codes, customer specifications, and internal quality standards. The Quality Control Manager works closely with Engineering, Production, Authorized Inspectors, customers, vendors, and leadership to support audit readiness, product compliance, and continuous improvement. Tasks & Responsibilities
  • Lead, maintain, and improve the company’s Quality Control Manual, procedures, forms, and records to ensure compliance with applicable code and customer requirements.
  • Maintain and apply quality standards and inspection procedures aligned with ASME, API, AWS, TEMA, UL, engineering specifications, and internal requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain Inspection Test Plans, shop travelers, weld maps, project data packages, test records, and final quality documentation.
  • Coordinate inspections with Authorized Inspectors, customer inspectors, production teams, and project stakeholders to support efficient workflow and code compliance.
  • Inspect incoming materials, major fit-ups, hold points, welds, fabrication details, pressure components, and completed products for conformance to drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Perform or oversee visual inspections, liquid penetrant inspections, hydrostatic testing, and final quality checks before product release or shipment.
  • Maintain welder qualification records, performance continuity records, calibration logs, test gauge logs, and other quality control documentation.
  • Support welder qualification testing and ensure welding procedures, qualifications, and related records remain current and properly controlled.
  • Assist with Authorized Inspector reviews, National Board audits, customer audits, and other quality or regulatory assessments.
  • Review material test reports, traceability documentation, vendor quality records, and subcontractor documentation for compliance with project requirements.
  • Identify quality issues, communicate required corrections, support root cause analysis, and help implement practical corrective and preventive actions.
  • Partner with Production and Engineering to resolve quality concerns, clarify requirements, and promote consistent workmanship throughout the fabrication process.
  • Provide guidance and training support to welders, fabricators, fitters, and production personnel regarding quality expectations, inspection requirements, and shop-floor standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support safety, compliance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

Competencies

  • Experience in quality control, quality assurance, welding, fabrication, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, or heavy metal manufacturing.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME Section VIII and Section IX, AWS requirements, inspection practices, fabrication documentation, and shop-floor quality controls.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification preferred or required based on business needs; additional API, NACE, or related certifications are a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, material specifications, shop packages, inspection travelers, and technical requirements.
  • Experience with weld inspection, material traceability, NDT coordination, hydrostatic testing, calibration control, and final documentation packages.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, manage inspection schedules, and support audit readiness.
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to work effectively with inspectors, customers, vendors, supervisors, production employees, and company leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify quality concerns, recommend corrective actions, and follow issues through to resolution.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, code compliance, workmanship quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, quality, manufacturing, or a related field preferred; equivalent hands-on quality control experience may be considered.
  • Five or more years of progressive quality control experience in custom fabrication, pressure vessel manufacturing, welding, or a related industrial environment preferred.
  • Prior supervisory, lead, or quality management experience is preferred.
