The Oregonian/OregonLive in Portland, Oregon, is seeking a Sports Content Supervisor to help manage and guide coverage of an award-winning department dedicated to delivering interesting and essential sports journalism.

We're seeking someone who thrives at coaching and managing others while juggling multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. An emphasis for this position will be growing our base of digital subscribers, particularly among readers interested in high school sports.

We want a tested leader who can guide and develop reporters of varying experience levels. We expect this person will work collaboratively and collegially with staff to produce breaking news and elevate daily and enterprise coverage. The supervisor will also work with our Sports Editor to refine how we tell and deliver stories, meeting readers where they are.

Core coverage areas for The Oregonian/OregonLive sports section include the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers, the Portland Trail Blazers, high school sports and the business and culture of women's sports, including the Portland Fire.

We're looking for someone with solid editing skills, sound knowledge of Oregon sports and a can-do attitude. Experience producing social media, video and podcast content is a big plus.

What you'll be doing:

  • Plan coverage and manage reporters
  • Push reporters to balance high-interest, high-growth content with in-depth exclusives that drive subscriptions
  • Guide story selection and edit a steady flow of work, from game coverage to profiles to enterprise projects
  • Collaborate closely with social media, newsletters and visuals teams to grow audience and engagement
  • Stay current on media trends to help the team find and engage audiences on emerging platforms
  • Provide regular and constructive feedback to staff; work collaboratively with the Sports Editor and others to develop individual goals and personal development plans for employees

The ideal candidate has the following:

  • At least 1 year of management experience or 3+ years in sports journalism with demonstrated leadership skills
  • Superb news judgment, ethics and story instincts
  • Strong headline writing, line-editing and copy-editing skills
  • A sense of urgency around breaking news
  • Ability to work nights and weekends based on sports schedules
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; comfort managing in a hybrid work environment
  • Ability to juggle multiple stories and collaborate across departments
  • A demonstrated ability to reflect underrepresented communities in sports coverage
  • Understanding of metrics and how to leverage platforms for maximum reach
  • Familiarity with newsletters, podcasting and social media best practices
  • Experience working with freelancers
  • Familiarity with the Oregon sports landscape

This is a hybrid position based out of the Portland metro area. The anticipated hiring range is $75,000 to $85,000.
