Job description

Role: Sr. Project / Staff Accountant - Construction
Employment Type: Full-Time, Onsite
Location: San Diego, CA

Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Sr. Project / Staff Accountant with strong construction accounting expertise to oversee project financial performance, job costing, contract administration, compliance tracking, and financial reporting. This role will partner closely with Project Managers and leadership to support strategic decision-making, manage project budgets, and ensure subcontractor compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Setup & Budgeting: Establish project budgets, SOVs, job cost structures, and maintain ongoing project financial records

  • Contract Management: Manage prime contract change orders, subcontractor agreements, subcontractor change orders, and contract compliance requirements

  • Cost Analysis & Job Costing: Monitor project costs, perform variance analysis, forecasting, WIP reporting, and profitability reviews

  • Billing & Invoice Management: Process customer billings, subcontractor billings, invoices, lien releases, and collections support

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, monthly financial reports, and project performance analysis

  • Compliance & Audit Support: Track subcontractor compliance, insurance certificates, bond requests, DCIP/CCIP requirements, and support audits

  • Risk Management: Identify financial and contractual risks and implement controls to improve accuracy and compliance

  • Documentation Management: Maintain subcontractor agreements, compliance records, insurance documents, and audit-ready files

  • Collaboration: Partner with Project Managers, Accounting, Operations, Customers, and Vendors to ensure financial and contractual success

  • Leadership Support: Serve as a financial resource and advisor to project teams and company leadership

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • 4+ years of accounting, finance, or project accounting experience within the construction industry

  • Strong experience with job costing, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition

  • Experience managing construction project budgets, forecasting, and cost analysis

  • Experience reviewing subcontractor agreements, change orders, and contract compliance

  • Advanced proficiency with Sage Intacct

  • Advanced proficiency with Procore

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment:
