Job description

The Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse provides high quality, patient centered care to individuals requiring close monitoring and specialized support. This per diem role at Sentara offers flexible scheduling across day or night shifts. The RN must demonstrate strong clinical judgment, telemetry skills, and the ability to respond to evolving patient needs. A minimum of 2+ years recent PCU experience is required with the ability to start ASAP.


Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Care & Monitoring
  • Deliver direct nursing care to PCU/intermediate care patients with complex and evolving medical conditions.
  • Interpret and monitor telemetry, vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and lab results.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, implement care plans, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Administer medications, IV therapies, and treatments per provider orders.
Clinical Skills & Procedures
  • Manage patients with cardiac conditions, respiratory compromise, post surgical recovery, or other moderate acuity needs.
  • Perform tasks such as central line care, wound care, titrating medications according to unit policy, and oxygen therapy.
  • Recognize early signs of deterioration and initiate appropriate interventions.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, case managers, and ancillary teams.
  • Provide clear communication during hand offs and multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Offer patient and family education to support treatment understanding and recovery.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation within the EMR system.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, PCU protocols, and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Uphold patient safety and infection control practices at all times.

Required Qualifications
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (state specific).
  • Minimum 2+ years of recent PCU experience in a hospital setting.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Strong telemetry interpretation and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently during per diem shifts.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a high acuity PCU/Stepdown environment.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and cardiac monitoring equipment.
  • BSN preferred (but not required).
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and patient care skills.
