Programming Intern information

What kinds of projects and tasks can a Programming Intern expect to work on during their internship?

Programming Interns typically support ongoing development projects by writing and testing code, fixing bugs, and assisting with documentation. You may be assigned to work on specific modules, perform code reviews, or help automate repetitive tasks under the guidance of senior developers. Interns often participate in team meetings, collaborate closely with other interns and full-time engineers, and gain exposure to version control systems and agile workflows. These experiences are designed to help you build practical skills while contributing meaningfully to the team's goals.

Is 22 too old for an internship?

Programming internships are open to candidates of various ages, including 22. Age is generally not a barrier, and many interns are in their early twenties or older, especially if they are transitioning careers or gaining new skills in programming languages and tools. Employers value skills and enthusiasm over age in internship roles.

Is 23 an hour good for an internship?

A $23 hourly rate for a programming internship is above the average, which typically ranges from minimum wage to around $20 per hour depending on location and company. Interns often gain experience in coding languages, tools, and collaborative environments, and higher pay may reflect advanced skills or competitive markets. However, compensation should also consider the internship's responsibilities, location, and industry standards.

They are highly competitive and valued for providing real-world experience and potential pathways to full-time employment.

What does a programming intern do?

A programming intern assists with software development tasks such as writing, testing, and debugging code under the supervision of experienced developers. They often work with programming languages like Python, Java, or C++, and may gain experience using development tools, version control systems, and collaborative platforms. The role provides hands-on learning opportunities in a professional coding environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Programming Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Programming Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms, often gained through coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic debugging tools, and at least one programming language such as Python, Java, or C++ is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and the ability to communicate effectively within a team help interns stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial for quickly adapting to real-world projects, collaborating with colleagues, and making meaningful contributions during the internship.

About the Role:

Hey future engineer! Looking to gain hands-on experience in automation and control systems while working with a team that actually values your input? Harpak-ULMA is looking for a Controls Engineering Intern to dive into the world of PLC programming, HMI design, and electrical systems. You wonโ€™t be grabbing coffeeโ€”youโ€™ll be working on real-world projects alongside experienced engineers.

Located at our Taunton, MA facility, youโ€™ll also get exposure to our manufacturing processes, shop, training center, and R&D projectsโ€”so thereโ€™s never a dull moment.

What Youโ€™ll Be Doing:
  • Designing, developing, and testing control systems for automation and manufacturing.

  • Supporting PLC programming and troubleshooting control logic.

  • Creating and modifying HMI (Human-Machine Interface) screens for system operations.

  • Assisting in electrical schematic design and wiring diagrams.

  • Performing system testing and validation to ensure everything runs smoothly and safely.

  • Troubleshooting hardware and software control issues.

  • Collaborating with service technicians, project managers, and software developers to bring ideas to life.

  • Documenting technical procedures, test results, and system configurations.

  • Bringing your ideas to team meetingsโ€”we love innovation!

Who You Are:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field.

  • Have some basic PLC programming knowledge (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar preferred).

  • Familiar with HMI development, SCADA systems, and industrial networks (bonus points!).

  • Comfortable working with electrical circuits, wiring diagrams, and control panel design.

  • A problem-solver with strong attention to detail.

  • A self-starter who can work independently but also thrives in a team setting.

  • A great communicator with solid written and verbal skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Extra Skills Thatโ€™ll Make You Stand Out:
  • Experience with CAD software for electrical schematics (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, etc.).

  • Some knowledge of robotic systems and motion control.

  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting automation systems.

  • Exposure to industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).

Why Youโ€™ll Love This Internship:
  • Work on real projectsโ€”not just busy work.

  • Mentorship from seasoned engineers who actually want to help you grow.

  • Networking opportunities with professionals in engineering and automation.

  • A chance to land a full-time job after graduation!
