Title:

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Program Summary

KBR is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the design, construction, and accreditation of an ICD 705-compliant SCIFaaS facility with a significant data center infrastructure component, contributing across mechanical systems, power, cooling, IT, secure communications, and compliance.

Job Summary

The Intern will work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment amongst professionals within an engineering environment. Under the supervision and mentorship of technical personnel, this intern will be introduced but not limited to processes, procedures, and tools to efficiently perform hardware research and integration, component research, and engineering documentation.

Roles and Responsibilities

Mechanical Engineering (Power, Cooling, Backup Systems)

  • Assist with HVAC systems, airflow management, cooling load analysis, UPS coordination, and generator integration. Support redundancy validation (N+1/2N) and commissioning activities.

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Review drawings, track RFIs/ECRs, and maintain as-built documentation.

Construction & Trade Coordination

  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, low-voltage, and generator trades; track progress and validate installations; maintain punch lists.

IT & Data Center Infrastructure Support

  • Support rack layouts, PDUs, structured cabling, and airflow-aligned equipment placement.

Security & ICD 705 Compliance

  • Support compliance with ICD 705 requirements, accreditation packages, and secure system documentation.

Policy, Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain SOPs, system documentation, commissioning reports, and audit-ready artifacts.

Program & Project Support

  • Track milestones, risks, and prepare status inputs for leadership (WAR/IPR).

Data Flows & Secure Communications (NIPR / HTS)

  • Assist in documenting and validating data flows across NIPRNet and Higher Than Secret (HTS) communication pathways.
  • Support circuit provisioning coordination, boundary definition, and separation of networks in compliance with security requirements.
  • Help develop network diagrams, data flow mappings, and interface control documentation.
  • Ensure proper routing, labeling, and physical/logical separation of classified and unclassified systems, and support validation of COMSEC handling and secure transmission paths.

Sample Tasking

  • Map NIPR and HTS data flows, validate circuit separation, support cooling and generator validation, assist commissioning checklists, and compile accreditation evidence.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at a four-year university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clearance: Ability to obtain/hold a U.S. security clearance preferred
  • Pursuing degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering; familiarity with networking fundamentals preferred.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00
  • Able to work 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Exposure to secure networks, data center infrastructure, or AutoCAD/Revit tools.

Work Location: North Charleston, SC (Onsite / Hybrid schedule)
