What do programming interns do?

Programming Interns typically support ongoing development projects by writing and testing code, fixing bugs, and assisting with documentation. You may be assigned to work on specific modules, perform code reviews, or help automate repetitive tasks under the guidance of senior developers. Interns often participate in team meetings, collaborate closely with other interns and full-time engineers, and gain exposure to version control systems and agile workflows. These experiences are designed to help you build practical skills while contributing meaningfully to the team's goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programming intern?

To thrive as a Programming Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms, often gained through coursework in computer science or related fields. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and the ability to communicate effectively within a team help interns stand out. Job description

Forward Deployed Engineer Intern
San Francisco • Summer • In-person
What we do
We're building Infragrid to end the tax of manual financial work. We capture how businesses operate (SOPs, screen recordings, and analyst expertise), and compile those workflows into deterministic software. The result is an operational platform that powers AI automation across insurance, banking, and commercial real estate. Backed by a16z; built by ex-Palantir, ex-Mercor, and ex-AWS engineers.
What you'll do
As a Forward Deployed Engineer Intern, you'll work directly with customers and the founding team to deliver real business impact from day one.
One week might look like:
  • Join a customer call on Monday to understand their toughest challenges
  • Collaborate with founders and engineers on Tuesday to architect a solution
  • Deploy your product to production by Thursday and watch customers use your work

You'll work across:
  • Workflow engine
  • Ontology and data models
  • AI-powered applications
  • Screen-recorder-to-code platform
  • Infrastructure and backend systems

What we're looking for
We're looking for hands-on builders eager to learn from direct customer feedback and quick iteration cycles. You've built products people actually use and know what it's like to solve problems on the fly when software breaks in production.
You should be comfortable with:
  • React, TypeScript, Python
  • SQL and API development
  • AWS or modern cloud infrastructure
  • Building AI products with LLMs, RAG, or agentic systems

You'll have the chance to own more product surface area in one summer than most engineers see in their first year at a big company.
