Job description

AccuWeather is seeking an experienced and highly collaborative Director, AFB Technologies to provide technical leadership for the platforms, applications, services, and data that power AccuWeather for Business (AFB).

This role will be responsible for the technology strategy and evolution of the AFB web, mobile app, API, and data capabilities. The Director will develop a strong understanding of existing systems and business needs, work across Technology, Product, Security, Operations, and other teams to establish a modernization strategy, and lead its execution while continuing to support the needs of AccuWeather's enterprise customers.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical depth, people leadership, strategic thinking, and a pragmatic approach to modernization. This leader will help simplify and modernize AFB technologies,

strengthen security and operational practices, drive progress toward SOC 2 compliance, expand the use of AI across engineering and product capabilities, and identify opportunities for AFB technology investments to be reused across other AccuWeather platforms.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide technical and organizational leadership for the AFB web portal, mobile applications, APIs, and AFB-specific data capabilities
  • Develop a deep understanding of existing AFB systems, integrations, dependencies, data flows, technical debt, and operational processes to establish a clear baseline for future investment
  • Define and execute a technology strategy and modernization roadmap that balances new capabilities, customer commitments, reliability, security, technical debt, and sustainability
  • Partner closely with Product, Technology, Security, Operations, and business stakeholders to translate AFB business and customer needs into scalable technical solutions and priorities
  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and workflows to improve software development, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and overall productivity
  • Identify and lead opportunities to incorporate AI into AFB platforms and workflows where it can create meaningful customer value, improve operational efficiency, simplify complex data, or enable new enterprise capabilities while maintaining appropriate security and governance
  • Modernize applications, services, APIs, and data capabilities using approaches that improve maintainability, scalability, observability, developer productivity, and speed of delivery
  • Identify opportunities to create shared services, APIs, data capabilities, components, and platforms that can be reused across AFB and other AccuWeather products
  • Drive AFB technology toward SOC 2 readiness and compliance, partnering with Security and other teams to establish appropriate controls and practices around access, change management, delivery, monitoring, incident response, data protection, SLAโ€™s, and processes
  • Ensure AFB platforms are reliable, secure, performant, scalable, monitorable, and supportable for AccuWeather's enterprise customers
  • Establish and continuously improve software engineering, testing, API, data, and delivery practices across the AFB technology ecosystem
  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineers and technical contributors, establishing clear ownership, expectations, priorities, and opportunities for professional growth
  • Define and monitor meaningful measures of platform health, engineering effectiveness, reliability, security, modernization progress, and delivery performance
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, technology leadership, enterprise applications, digital platforms, or related disciplines
  • 5+ years of experience leading and developing software engineering or technology teams
  • Demonstrated experience defining technology strategy and leading the modernization of existing applications, services, APIs, or data platforms
  • Strong technical understanding of modern web applications, mobile applications, APIs, cloud technologies, distributed systems, data platforms, and software delivery practices
  • Experience supporting business-critical or enterprise-facing technology platforms with demanding reliability, security, performance, and customer requirements
  • Experience with security, compliance, and technology control frameworks; direct experience supporting SOC 2 readiness or compliance is strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of API design, integration patterns, data architecture, and approaches that enable capabilities to be shared and reused across products
  • Experience applying AI-assisted development tools and a strong understanding of the opportunities, risks, and practical applications of AI within software engineering and digital products
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate legacy systems, technical debt, and competing priorities and develop pragmatic, incremental modernization strategies
  • Ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries, influence technical direction, and lead complex initiatives involving multiple teams and stakeholders
  • Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical, business, and executive audiences
  • Self-driven, adaptable, collaborative, and comfortable taking ownership of complex technology challenges
