Job description


A Day in the Life:
The Director of Software Engineering is a hands-on, strategic technology leader responsible for building and modernizing Hertz's next-generation rental platforms that power all brands (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty), countries, and franchise partners.
This role blends deep technical leadership, people development, and platform ownership. You will lead globally distributed engineering teams while remaining close to the code, architecture decisions, and delivery outcomes. You will partner closely with Product, Operations, and Franchise teams to build scalable, resilient systems that support the full rental lifecycle - from reservation to return.
You will help define how Hertz builds software: modern architectures, engineering culture, delivery excellence, and platform reliability at global scale.
What you will do:
  • Lead the design, build, and modernization of global consumer & rental systems supporting multi-brand, multi-country, and franchise operations
  • Own the future-state architecture for rental platforms, ensuring scalability, configurability, and regulatory compliance across regions
  • Collaborate with cross functional leaders on your product teams (product management, design) to develop and execute backlogs & roadmaps
  • Remain hands-on through architecture reviews, technical design, and selective pairing with senior engineers
  • Build and lead high-performing global engineering teams (onshore, nearshore, offshore)
  • Develop engineering talent; drive career paths, rotations, and learning plans
  • Establish and evolve engineering standards: cloud-native patterns, APIs, event-driven systems, resiliency, and observability
  • Drive a culture of ownership, quality, speed, and empathy
  • Ensure platforms are secure, compliant, highly available, and operationally excellent
  • Collaborate with enterprise architecture and platform teams to align on shared services and technology strategy
  • Stay current with new technology trends in the platform, AI, streaming and IoT space
  • Ensure high quality, consistent, easy to use and compliance software solutions

What We're Looking For:
  • 10+ years of Software Engineering experience designing and implementing solutions using cloud native technologies and Agile methodologies
  • Demonstrated success with modern development practices including RESTful API & microservice development, AWS, containerization techniques (such as DEE and Kubernetes) NoSQL, build systems (Maven, Gradle) and version control (Git).
  • Experience implementing enterprise integration / transformation patterns (abstract, surround, strangle) to integrate cloud native solutions with enterprise data sources & systems / (MQ, SOAP, XML)
  • A pattern of success on teams using Agile Methodologies
  • Strong communication skills and interest in a pair-programming environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or related field.

Starting salary is $175,000. The actual salary will be determined based on years of relevant work experience.
