Job description

Henderson Engineers is looking to hire a Senior Electrical Engineering Manager to join a business line who is servicing one of our oldest and largest clients. A Senior Engineering Manager is a senior technical leader with broad responsibilities related to the health, growth and performance of engineers within a sector. They are responsible for leading a team of engineers, driving technical excellence and operational efficiency through discipline-specific operational oversight, people development and strategic resource management to ensure the organization consistently delivers high-quality work while supporting the professional growth of its technical staff. They maintain a strong technical presence while guiding staff to execute the technical vision and strategy of the sector.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in relevant field of engineering (e.g., mechanical, electrical, fire protection, or architectural) preferred. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant progressive experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership or management role required.
  • Expert knowledge and proficiency in engineering design, A&E industry, codes, design guides and standards relating to a broad range of practices, projects and/or program types required.
  • Proficient knowledge and understanding of earned value, contracts and construction processes and methods required.
  • Working knowledge of current and industry specific tools and software required, including BIM modeling, markup and annotation, workflow and task management applications.
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to lead with empathy and clarity, navigate performance conversations constructively and support team members through challenge and change.
  • High technical aptitude with ability to learn, understand, and utilize various systems and processes. Experience and comfortability with training others on systems and processes.
  • Proven track record of developing high-performing teams, aligning them with organizational goals, and fostering cross-discipline collaboration.
  • Proven track record of serving as a connector between teams, leadership and business functions, translating vision into action and culture into practice.
  • Experience in championing the growth of others through mentorship, coaching and cultivating a pipeline of future leaders.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with designers at all levels in a clear and concise manner.
  • Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Team oriented and willingness and ability to function in a highly collaborative environment, in group projects and leading less experienced designers. Ability to work independently as needed.
  • Adapts to changing work environments, priorities and organizational needs.
  • Ability to prioritize, execute and/or direct multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and adjust to coaching.
  • Must be a self-starter, proactive and willing to teach, manage and/or help others as needed.
  • Must be trustworthy and capable of handling sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred.
  • Additional certifications aligning with the relevant technical field (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD, etc.)
  • preferred.
  • Sustainability certifications (e.g., CDP, LEED, WELL, etc.) preferred.
  • Performance as an Engineer of Record (EOR) preferred.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Leads the coaching culture across a team of technical staff through goal setting and alignment with organizational goals, measuring progress and ensuring succession planning, leadership development and technical mentorship are scalable within the sector.
  • Builds strong leadership teams and supports engagement across multiple levels within a sector.
  • Oversees performance management processes for their staff, sets expectations for Engineering Managers, monitors sector-wide performance trends and adjusts plans with business workload.
  • Proactively collaborates with sector leadership on business planning, team capacity, forecasted needs and cross-sector alignment to ensure an effective staffing strategy.
  • Cultivates psychological safety and inclusion and leads through trust and high-impact relationships.
  • Ensures discipline-specific communication reaches the sector and translates strategy into clear expectations for Engineering Managers and their teams.
  • Acts as a career coach, providing performance feedback and guidance on skills progression and career development, particularly for engineers advancing to more senior roles.
  • Practices effective employee relations and personnel management for the discipline.
  • Provides technical guidance, leveraging engineering judgement to solve complex challenges.

Quality Assurance:

  • Manages the application of quality strategies for the discipline and ensures quality standards are met.
  • Manages the application of quality assurance tools, processes, databases, priorities and industry best practices for the discipline.
  • Drives the application of quality initiatives to enhance engineering processes, optimize production and improve how we work.
  • Champions a culture of continuous improvement, implementing best practices and adopting developing technologies to drive operational excellence.
  • Supports the design and implementation of process improvements, ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory and environmental standards.

Sector Operations:

  • Works with sector leadership on resource allocation and assigning appropriate staff to project scopes as needed.
  • Proactively monitors and tracks earned value generation for the discipline through engagement with design staff, project managers and design leads on projects. Recommends tools and efficiencies for accurate data monitoring and reporting.
  • Ensures that the feedback loop on engineering initiatives, project staffing, and KPIs are functioning smoothly.
  • Serves as a consultant on interviews for technical production staff within the sector.
  • Works closely with engineering leadership to ensure the team adheres to technical processes and standards. Supports technical problem solving where necessary.
  • Manages employee performance and operational needs as necessary including performance evaluations, technical employee development, discipline, timesheets, etc.

Professional Engineer & Engineer of Record

(where applicable):

  • Consistently performs to a higher standard of industry-wide expectations associated with carrying a PE license and being enabled as an Engineer of Record (EOR), including making reasonable engineering decisions and delivering the highest quality of work and accountability to projects.
  • May be enabled as an Engineer of Record, having additional involvement, oversight, responsibility and accountability for the overall signing and sealing of projects.
