Description
The Library Summer Intern Coordinator is a seasonal position aligned with the Library Associate 3 role. The coordinator is responsible for supervising and mentoring summer interns while supporting daily library operations.
This role performs advanced paraprofessional duties, primarily at the public service desk. These include managing patron accounts, placing holds, handling fines, and resolving account issues. The Coordinator will train and guide summer interns, oversee their daily tasks, and ensure a positive and productive experience.
In addition, this role will help facilitate and support the Library's Summer Lunch Program by coordinating intern involvement and assisting with setup, kit distribution, craft/game activity planning, and cleanup. This position may also help with library programs, events, and volunteer coordination as needed.
Work Hours: Monday - Friday (10 AM - 2 PM)
Hour per week: 20
Work Location: Moreno Valley - Main
Job Status: Internship start date will commence in June 2026 following successful completion of a standard background check and end on August 31 2026.
Benefits Eligibility: This position is not eligible for benefits.
Hourly Pay Rate: $17.75
Primary Responsibilities
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
  • Provides customer service to patrons by greeting, providing tours, and assisting patrons in all areas of the library
  • Supervise Summer Interns, which includes managing performance, evaluation, interviewing/hiring, training, and approving timesheets.
  • Work closely with Librarians and library management to plan, implement, and promote programming activities.
  • Inform library patrons of rules of conduct as necessary, and enforce those rules when appropriate.
  • Maintain circulation records.
  • Assist with library opening and closing procedures.
  • Support the reference desk in assisting patrons with questions.
  • Coordinate volunteers and assign duties, providing necessary training.
  • May coordinate volunteers and assign duties, providing essential training.
  • Know and understand the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies).
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements for patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training, and/or work experience required.
  • A H.S. Diploma or GED is required, and a bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Three years' library experience preferred.
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with library systems and databases.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Multilingual speaking is a plus.
  • A high degree of proficiency in the MS Office suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, is desired.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work a regular schedule that may include days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 50 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials with a buddy system.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
