Programmer Drafter information

What is a programmer drafter?

Programmer Drafters are professionals who combine skills in computer programming and technical drafting. They use specialized software to create detailed technical drawings, blueprints, and plans for engineering, manufacturing, or architectural projects, and may also write code to automate drafting tasks or customize design software. Their work helps translate engineers' or architects' concepts into precise visual plans that can be used to guide construction or manufacturing. Programmer Drafters often have knowledge of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) programs and may develop scripts or macros to improve efficiency in drafting processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programmer drafter?

To thrive as a Programmer Drafter, you need strong technical drawing skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and proficiency in drafting software, usually supported by a degree or certification in drafting or a related field. Familiarity with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) tools such as AutoCAD and knowledge of CNC programming languages are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurately translating design concepts and collaborating with engineers. These skills ensure precise technical documentation and seamless integration of designs into manufacturing processes.

How does a programmer drafter typically collaborate with engineers and project managers during the design process?

Programmer Drafters regularly work closely with engineers and project managers to ensure that technical drawings and CAD models align with project specifications and practical requirements. Communication is key, as they often attend meetings to discuss design changes, clarify technical details, and incorporate feedback into their drafts. This collaborative environment helps ensure that digital models are both accurate and feasible for production or construction, and it also gives Programmer Drafters exposure to different disciplines, which can foster professional growth.

Description
The Engineering Drafter supports the Engineering and Product Development teams by creating accurate production drawings, assembly drawings, and technical documentation from 3D solid models. This role also supports the creation, entry, maintenance, and accuracy of product and part information within the company's ERP system.
The position requires strong attention to detail, proficiency in SolidWorks, a working knowledge of GD&T and manufacturing drawing standards, and the ability to manage technical product information throughout the product lifecycle. The Engineering Drafter may also assist in developing and updating installation instructions, product instructions, and other technical documentation for new and existing products.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create detailed part and assembly drawings from 3D solid models.
  • Apply proper Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) practices to engineering drawings.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, manufacturability, and adherence to company standards.
  • Create new products, parts, part numbers, assemblies, and related records within the ERP system.
  • Enter and maintain accurate product and part information within the ERP system.
  • Update existing ERP records as products, components, specifications, or other information changes.
  • Create and maintain Bills of Material (BOMs), component relationships, and supporting product information.
  • Assist with costing of components, parts, and assemblies.
  • Maintain engineering spreadsheets, documentation, and project information.
  • Assist with writing, updating, and maintaining installation instructions, product instructions, and other technical documentation for new and existing products.
  • Work with engineering, product, manufacturing, purchasing, and other departments to resolve drawing, product data, or technical documentation issues.
  • Support new product development and existing product improvement projects as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of new technologies, software, and processes that may improve engineering efficiency, documentation, or product development.
  • Follow company safety policies and procedures and perform work in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Summary

  • Experience entering, maintaining, or managing product and part information within an ERP, MRP, PDM, or similar business system.
  • Ability to accurately create and maintain part numbers, product records, Bills of Material, and supporting technical data.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing and data accuracy.
  • Ability to solve practical technical problems and work through situations where limited information or standardization exists.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet software, including Microsoft Excel or similar applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
