Mobile Crisis Response Team Member (2 Positions)

Full Time Position - Thompson, MB


Under the direction of the Program Manager, the MCRT Member will be responsible for providing rapid crisis intervention and support in remote/isolated First Nations communities throughout Manitoba in the priority areas of death by suicide, death by homicide, fatalities, States of Emergencies, but also in the areas of mental health. All work will be carried out in a manner that is consistent with Indigenous culture and values.

The MCRT Member will have an integrated approach to delivering crisis response activity and life promotion. The MCRT Member is required to deliver culturally responsive, dignified, trauma informed, and professional care to First Nations members in Manitoba.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Travel to remote/isolated First Nations communities throughout Manitoba, usually at very short notice.
  • Commit to the continuous learning of community social needs, impacts and changes.
  • Provide rapid crisis intervention and support in the priority area of suicide and homicide but also mental health, trauma, and care for survivors of death related crises.
  • Quick to respond to assess the level of risk and immediate needs and then provide a safety plan to stabilize crisis.
  • Deployment assignments will be received by the Intake Coordinators, MCRT Members are required to complete their Deployment Plan with expedience.
  • Develop Deployment Plans. Secure Deployment Plan information: crisis details, community contact, accommodations, special requirements.
  • Prepare travels, purchase orders, payment requisitions, visa request forms for Program Manager approval.
  • Ability to provide over-the-phone supports where deemed necessary.
  • Maintain up-to-date information/resources for off-reserve support or other services.
  • Ability to activate emergency services with accuracy for life-threatening inbound/outbound calls.
  • Works as part of a dedicated team.
  • Works and foster relationships among community Elders, storytellers, knowledge keepers and members.
  • Duty to report: Child Abuse Disclosure, Harm Disclosure, or Threat of Violence Disclosure.
  • Maintains appropriate and secure documentation, to keep detailed notes of client and stakeholder interactions.
  • Maintain and file work related documents such as: Case Notes, Field Notes, Summary Reports, Intake Reports, Deployment Plans, Daily Activity Reports, Mental Health Counseling Activity Report, Mental Wellness Report, Gas Allowance Receipts, any receipts required, MKO Vehicle Logs, all reports as required by the MCRT Program.
  • Ensure the Mandatory Reporting requirements of this role are fulfilled.
  • Ensure the accuracy of data entry into the MCRT Database for record keeping; ensuring there are physical backup paperwork of notes, data, reports, summaries, and other mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Provide Data as requested by the Database Reports Analyst to ensure client files are updated. The Database Reports Analyst will submit your client data into the database for electronic/secure file storage.
  • Develop safe storage for work related documents as part of the Remote Worker, working from home, aspect of their employment.
  • Report to the MCRT office when required by the Program Manager.
  • Respects the right of confidentiality in all matters affecting or involving clients in accordance with The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) - requests for information regarding clients from persons not authorized or entitled to receive such information without the client's written consent.
  • Engage as part of the broader network of supports currently in place, including any provincial health authority, resources and all other mental health supports and/or services.
  • Participate as request, in development and improvement processes that affect First Nations community crisis programs and support services.
  • Provides appropriate temporary advocacy support where clients may not be able meet their immediate needs.
  • Manage, prepare, document follow-up needs for active deployment.
  • Plan and arrange follow-up to occur virtually, over-the-phone, or other remote communications.
  • Plan and arrange appropriate Continuity of Care visits into communities where crisis stabilization is required, post crisis response deployment.
  • Willing to participate in the harvesting of traditional medicines.
  • Assists other members and carries out other duties as needed and assigned.
  • Work inclusively with gender diverse people.
  • Effectively manage time while deployed to First Nations communities.
  • Ensure tracking OT hours to not exceed the allotted amount stated in the Letter of Offer, written approval is required to exceed this amount by the Program Manager.
  • Monitor the crisis response emails, inbox and replies with the Program Manager and Intake Coordinators.
  • MKO is political advocacy organization that works to represent the leadership and member First Nations. All staff at MKO may be given other duties as assigned that enable MKO to fulfill the mandate and responsibility to its member communities.


Education and Experience


  • First Nations traditional healing practices as a traditional elder or spiritual leader.
  • 5 years experience working in a crisis response environment.
  • A willingness to travel.
  • Working knowledge of Internet, E-mail and other business-related computer software such as data-base experience.
  • Have or willing to complete Critical Incident Debriefing, Suicide Risk Assessment, ICBOC (Indigenous Certification Board of Canada), Mental Health First Aid, and MKO Crisis Training.
  • Ability to effectively manage time.
  • Ability to speak Cree or Dene is a definite asset.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Provide a current Police Criminal Security Clearance and satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including clearance to work with vulnerable people.
  • Trauma informed and inclusive.
  • Preference will be given to First Nations candidates.
