Job description

Position Title:                      Pharmacy Intern
Department:                         Pharmacy 
Supervisor:                          Pharmacy Director
Status / Hours per week:    Non-exempt / Full-Time (40 hours per week)

Pay Range: The expected base pay for the position is $19-$26 per hour, commensurate with experience, and may be increased based on other factors, such as language, certifications, etc.

Primary Function:

The Pharmacy Intern provides support to licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians by assisting in dispensing, medication counseling, inventory management, and other pharmacy operations under direct supervision. The Intern gains practical experience in community pharmacy practice while ensuring patient safety, adherence to all federal and state regulations, and Upham’s policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties
•    Assist pharmacists and technicians in prescription preparation, verification, and dispensing under direct supervision.
•    Provide medication counseling and education to patients as allowed under state law and pharmacy protocols.
•    Participate in inventory management, including stocking, restocking, and verifying medication expiration dates.
•    Accurately enter prescription data into the pharmacy system, maintaining HIPAA and Upham confidentiality standards.
•    Support pharmacy staff in patient care services, including immunizations, MTM (Medication Therapy Management), and adherence programs.
•    Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of the pharmacy workspace.
•    Follow all Upham’s policies, federal and state regulations, and professional standards for pharmacy practice.

Additional Duties
•    Participate in learning opportunities and pharmacy educational programs.
•    Assist with special projects, community outreach, or health education initiatives as requested.
•    Observe and report any operational, safety, or patient care concerns to supervising pharmacist. 
 

Minimum Basic Knowledge:

•    Current enrollment in an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program or equivalent.
•    Understanding of basic pharmacy principles, calculations, and medication nomenclature.
•    Awareness of HIPAA regulations, pharmacy law, and patient confidentiality. 

Experience & Qualifications:

•    Valid Massachusetts Pharmacy Intern License required.
•    No previous pharmacy work experience required, though prior internship, volunteer, or work experience in healthcare is preferred.
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills.
•    Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accuracy under supervision.
•    Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and commitment to patient-centered care.
•    Proficiency with computers and pharmacy software preferred.

Define Access Level to PHI:  Level 3: Authorized to access only certain limited categories of PHI and specific sections of the patient’s medical record necessary to perform pharmacy duties under supervision. Interns must confine use of PHI to the minimum necessary to complete assigned tasks and follow Upham’s Minimum Necessary Information Policy.
