Position Overview
The Development Manager, North America is responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual and institutional donors to support Room to Read's global mission. Reporting to the Development Director, North America, this role manages and grows a portfolio of donors and prospects while helping expand the pipeline of supporters across the region.
The Development Manager builds meaningful donor relationships, identifies opportunities for increased engagement and giving, and partners with colleagues across the organization to connect donors with Room to Read's impact. The role also supports the continued growth of the North American Mid-Net-Worth (MNW) donor program by identifying and qualifying prospective donors for cultivation and upgrade.
This is an opportunity for an experienced development professional with strong donor relationship skills and exposure to major gifts who is ready to take on greater ownership of a donor portfolio and grow their frontline fundraising experience.
Duties & Responsibilities
Donor Portfolio Management & Fundraising
Manage and grow a portfolio of individual and institutional donors and prospects, contributing to annual fundraising goals through renewals, upgrades, and new gifts.
Develop and implement individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies based on donor interests, giving history, capacity, and engagement.
Cultivate, solicit, and steward donors across a range of giving levels, including major gifts.
Build strong, long-term donor relationships through consistent and meaningful engagement, including in-person and virtual meetings.
Identify opportunities to deepen donor engagement and increase giving over time.
Maintain an active pipeline of prospective donors and use moves management to advance relationships toward solicitation.
Maintain accurate and timely donor strategies, activity, projections, and other portfolio information in Salesforce.
Pipeline & Mid-Net-Worth Development
Support the continued growth of the North American Mid-Net-Worth donor program by identifying and qualifying prospective donors for cultivation and upgrade.
Partner with the Development Director and colleagues to identify opportunities to move donors into higher levels of engagement and giving.
Conduct prospect research and use donor data and insights to prioritize prospects and inform cultivation strategies.
Contribute to pipeline development and forecasting to support North American fundraising goals.
Donor Engagement & Communications
Develop compelling donor communications, proposals, concept notes, stewardship reports, and other materials that connect donor interests with Room to Read's programs and impact.
Partner with program and communications colleagues to remain knowledgeable about Room to Read's work and effectively communicate its impact to donors.
Engage donors through meetings, events, program updates, and other cultivation and stewardship opportunities.
Support donor events and other engagement activities, including identifying and cultivating prospective attendees and conducting appropriate follow-up.
Collaboration
Work closely with the Development Director and North America Development team to advance fundraising priorities and donor strategies.
Collaborate with colleagues across Development and Communications, Programs, Finance, and other teams to develop donor opportunities and ensure effective stewardship.
Support organizational leaders and colleagues participating in donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
Contribute to a collaborative, results-oriented fundraising culture and share information and best practices across the team.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
4+ years of progressive fundraising or development experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
Experience cultivating and stewarding individual donors, with exposure to major gifts and readiness to take on greater major gifts responsibility.
Experience managing donor relationships or a fundraising portfolio through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
Experience supporting mid-level giving, donor segmentation, donor upgrades, or other individual giving strategies.
Strong relationship-building skills and ability to develop trusted relationships with donors, prospects, and internal stakeholders.
Comfort engaging donors and making asks in person and virtually.
Experience using fundraising pipelines, moves management, and donor data to inform fundraising strategy and priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop compelling donor-facing communications.
Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple donor relationships and priorities.
Proficiency with fundraising CRMs; Salesforce experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with major donors, family foundations, corporate donors, or other high-value supporters.
Experience with international development, education, literacy, girls' education, or another globally focused mission.
Experience identifying and qualifying prospects for movement from mid-level to major giving.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this role is $88,000 to $106,000. Compensation may vary depending on several factors including, but not limited to, experience, skill set, and relevant education or certifications.
