Position Summary:
The Assistant Program Director (APD), reporting to the Program Director, oversees the curriculum, ensuring program competencies are met and course learning outcomes and instructional objectives are achievable, well-written, clear in course content, and assessed. The APD has a presence in the classroom, ensuring student engagement and faculty feedback and mentoring in course content. The APD assists the PD with program assessment and continuous quality improvement.
The role supports continuity of operations by serving as a liaison among faculty, staff, students, and external partners and is prepared to assume interim leadership during the Program Director's absence.
The APD will contribute to curriculum development and delivery across the didactic and/or clinical phases, apply effective instructional strategies, and support course design, evaluation, and assessment activities. Responsibilities also include mentoring and supervision of student scholarly or research projects and service to the department, university, and appropriate professional and community organizations. The successful candidate will support overall administration of the PA program, which may include contributing to the preparation of accreditation documents (e.g., self-study reports, annual updates) and assisting with logistics and documentation in support of ARC-PA site visits and interim reviews.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance and coordination to the Director of Didactic Education and the Director of Clinical Education in implementing and evaluating program components, ensuring alignment with the curriculum and direction set by the Program Director.
  • Support faculty success by assisting with onboarding, mentoring, faculty development and refinement, and peer evaluation processes in collaboration with the Program Director.
  • Serve as interim Program Director in the event of a Program Director vacancy or temporary absence.
  • Support program assessment activities, including data collection, analysis, and reporting on student outcomes and continuous improvement initiatives in accordance with the program's assessment plan.
  • Provide academic advising to assigned PA students; monitor performance and assist with remediation planning and implementation as needed.
  • Participate in admissions and recruitment activities, including application review, interview facilitation, and recruitment events, consistent with program goals.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director and faculty to develop, implement, and continuously improve the didactic and clinical curriculum.
  • Teach assigned didactic and/or clinical coursework using effective, student-centered instructional methods.
  • Support academic operations including exam development, OSCE planning, course coordination, and remediation processes.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Skill Requisites:
  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Terminal degree as a Physician Assistant
  • Current or emeritus NCCPA certification
  • PAs with active certification must be eligible for state licensure or hold an active, valid, and unencumbered state license
  • Qualified through academic preparation and/or experience to teach assigned subjects

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 3 years of full-time higher education experience
  • Earned Doctorate preferred (PhD, EdD, DMSc, DHSc)
  • Experience with instructional design, course development, item writing for assessment, and mentoring
  • Experience with program administration, fiscal management of the program, continuous programmatic review and analysis, program planning, program development, knowledge of ARC-PA required documents, and adherence to the Standards and ARC-PA policies.
  • Computer-based skills (i.e., software, analytical, and report writing skills) and experience with computerized learning management systems
