Job description

Department:                     Department of Subways 

Location:                          333 West 53rd Street, New York, NY 10019

Position Title:                   Data Analyst (Power), Emerging Talent Intern

Hourly Rate:                    $19.00 (Undergraduate)

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.

OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:

The Power Department is responsible for maintaining and managing the electrical and third rail systems that supply traction power to the New York City Transit network. It ensures safe, reliable, and continuous electrical service for train operations across the system. The Electrical oversee substations, cable systems, and maintenance, while the Third Rail focuses on maintaining and upgrading the third rail used to power trains. Together, these divisions handle critical repairs, capital projects, and emergency responses to sustain system reliability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in developing Power BI dashboards that visualize operational and performance data.
  • Analyze departmental data to identify inefficiencies, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
  • Prepare and present data findings to management in a clear and actionable format.
  • Support the creation of automated workflows using Power Automate to streamline daily processes.
  • Help maintain and enhance SharePoint sites for improved information organization and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with analysts, engineers, and management teams on ongoing operational projects.
  • Document workflows, data procedures, and project updates for internal use and reporting.
  • Perform routine data quality checks to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability of reports.

PROJECTS:

  • Power BI Reporting & Insights Project - The intern will develop interactive Power BI dashboards by pulling and transforming operational data, uncovering performance patterns, and delivering insights that support data‑driven decision-making across the department.
  • Departmental Data Analysis & Performance Evaluation Project -The intern will conduct detailed reviews of departmental workflows and metrics, identify performance gaps or inefficiencies, and present findings to management in a clear and actionable format to help improve overall departmental output.
  • Automation & Workflow Development Project -The intern will design and build automated processes using Power Automate and SharePoint, creating tools and integrations that reduce manual work, streamline information flow, and support productivity across the team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills. 
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA.
  • Major(s) Preferred: Computer Science, or related field.
