Job description

NiSource Internship Program Introduction

NiSource is currently seeking a Summer IT - Software Engineer Intern. Successful applicants will become integral members of the department while learning within a team environment, completing meaningful tasks and collaborating with team members and leaders on important projects. This position will be a great opportunity for the candidate desiring to launch their career in this field. Successful applicants will build professional relationships with other interns and all levels of NiSource personnel while participating in rewarding professional development exercises and fun, team-building activities. Interns will obtain a broad overview of NiSource's operations and current events in the utilities industry.

This is a 12-week summer internship program starting in May 2027, for students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2027. The role is based in Columbus, OH or Merrillville, IN. Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location to be eligible.
Essential Functions

  • Enterprise Architecture
    Enterprise Architecture is responsible for creating the technology strategy and roadmap. This team is responsible for developing standards and guidelines that should be used in planning, designing and implementing Information Technology applications and platforms. This team works collaboratively with other groups to drive the architecture vision for NiSource.
  • IT Services
    The Services supports the delivery of IT Application and Infrastructure services, including hardware and software asset and configuration management, for all NiSource business units. This role works with the Manager of IT Service Integration, Manager of IT Service Governance and other Technology Tower Leads to ensure that Infrastructure and Application Services are fully integrated and delivered within the scope of Service Provider Contracts as reflected by service levels, statements of work and pertinent schedules/exhibits.
  • Infrastructure
    Infrastructure, network delivery, primary responsibility is to provide network technical design leadership and to oversee execution of processes associated incident, problem, change, asset, and configuration management within this technology domain. This includes working with enterprise architects, program managers, IT analysts and managed service providers to effectively manage infrastructure operations and support delivery of Infrastructure projects. It also includes development and periodic review of ITIL based processes and practices to ensure highly available operations and compliance with architecture standards and strategies.
  • IT Security
    The IT Security organization is responsible for the resolution of IT Security incidents; manages preparation & planning for future IT security threats, and follows security trends, threats and vulnerabilities. This role will work on a project to develop and execute a specific cyber incident response scenario exercise and develop a broad-view perspective of the cybersecurity space. Incident response improvement with better Integration of security and IT Operations processes. Work across towers to understand the interrelationships between IT Operations processes, and our company as a whole.
  • IT Applications
  • The IT Applications Developer Job Family encompasses job responsibilities and accountability for various IT applications development, system administration, and support functions necessary to ensure a stable and reliable application environment for NiSource. The application environment encompasses mission critical information systems such as Gas distribution, Hydro and Electrical Grid control systems, Electronic Measurement and other business critical applications. The job also includes the analysis and development of business applications, system interfaces, and other duties related to application system development lifecycle.
  • Business Analytics

The Business Analytics Intern will leverage their skillset in areas such as data discovery, modeling and visualizing results to identify and discover patterns throughout the business. Through collaboration with business units, this professional will be capable of acquiring, cleansing and structuring data from multiple sources to deliver key analytics based insight to drive business decisions.


Required Qualifications For Position

  • Acquiring a degree in data science, computer science, computer engineering, statistics, mathematics
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have completed at least one year of undergraduate study
  • Experience with cloud, software development, data analytics, automation, or enterprise technologies
  • Keen attention to detail and a quality focused mindset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Self-discipline for planning and organizing tasks
  • Passionate about data
  • History of being able to learn new technology quickly
  • Solid skills in utilizing computers, operating systems, mobile devices and software (MS Office Suite, MS Project, and other IT applications).
  • Excellent analytical abilities, including process analysis and development, problem-solving and root-cause analysis.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship
