THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Criminal Justice offers a Bachelor of Science degree designed for the development of knowledge and understanding of practices, theory, ethics, concepts of justice, and to prepare students for professional careers in the criminal justice realm. We also offer a minor in Criminal Justice and a certificate in Crime Scene Investigation, while supporting science students with coursework in forensic science. Established in 1976, the degree program currently has over 400 students and enhances student success with experiential learning, hosting career fairs, and promoting internship and research opportunities. Our department prioritizes student success in all teaching modalities, with faculty certified in Quality Matters and engaging active learning pedagogy. While our department seeks a generalist who can teach a broad range of lower and upper-division criminal justice courses, candidates with expertise in criminal law, courts, and victimology will be prioritized.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in some of the following areas: criminal justice ethics, theories of crime, research methods in criminal justice, criminal law and the courts, victimology, restorative justice, and criminal law. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay may include courses at the Hayward campus, Concord Center, and/or online. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that tenure-track faculty members will perform their duties within the state of California. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Additional responsibilities include scholarly research, university service, and department representation at events.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization. Anticipated salary: $86,628-$92,844.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2027.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must expect to have an earned doctorate in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related field. An ABD will be considered, but the degree must be completed by the effective date of the appointment. Candidates with successful teaching experience at the university level are preferred. Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarly activity, including publications and presentations at professional conferences (including, but not limited to ASC, ACJS, or ASA).
