General Description
Writing Center Consultants conduct tutorials with clients who visit the Harbert Writing Center in person or online.
The Harbert Writing Center accepts applications for tutors on a continuous basis to fill morning, afternoon, evening, and online needs for the school year. However, this posting does not imply that there is an immediate opening. Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and the instructional needs of the institution.
Essential Job Duties
1. Assess client's writing needs.
2. Assist with the day-to-day operations of the center.
3. Provide individual tutorials to center patrons.
Education and Experience
1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Successful completion of English 101 and 102 (or the equivalent) and English 231 or 232 with a grade of A.
3. Enrollment in or completion of one of the following classes with a grade of A: ENG 454, 455, 456, or 457.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
1. Newly hired Writing Consultants must complete 10 hours of tutor training provided by the HWC. This training is split between an initial orientation and training workshop and monthly required meetings.
2. Must understand and be able to clearly teach others how to work through all parts of the writing process.
3. Successful candidates will possess excellent interpersonal skills with an aptitude to teach.
4. Exhibit professional qualities of sound judgement, dependability, and confidentiality.
