What are professional video game testers?

Professional video game testers, also known as quality assurance (QA) testers, are individuals hired by video game companies to play games in development in order to identify bugs, glitches, and other issues. Their main responsibility is to ensure that a game is as free of errors as possible before it is released to the public. Testers document problems they encounter, provide feedback to developers, and often follow specific test plans to check for both technical and gameplay issues. This role requires attention to detail, patience, and effective communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Professional Video Game Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Video Game Tester, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of gaming platforms and mechanics, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with bug tracking software like JIRA, consoles, PC hardware, and sometimes certifications in software testing are commonly required. Excellent communication, patience, and collaboration are important soft skills for effectively reporting issues and working within development teams. These abilities ensure games are thoroughly tested, bugs are clearly documented, and quality standards are maintained before release.

What are some typical challenges faced by professional video game testers during the quality assurance process?

Professional video game testers often encounter challenges such as identifying and documenting elusive or intermittent bugs, working under tight deadlines to meet release schedules, and adapting to frequent game updates or changes in development priorities. Testers must also maintain meticulous attention to detail when following test plans and collaborating with developers to ensure clear communication of issues. Balancing repetitive testing tasks with the need to stay engaged and thorough is another common challenge in this role.

What Does a Professional Video Game Tester Do?

Professional video game testers assess video games to find errors, bugs, or inconsistencies and report them to the gaming company. In this role, you may test gaming products on home or handheld consoles, including personal computers and smartphones. You play through the game from start to finish, examining each phase and noting any problems with the game's progression or code. Many professional video game testers also provide feedback on subjective elements, such as the visuals used the difficulty of specific challenges within the game. You may work in the office of a video game company or test products remotely.
