Position Title: Data Center Smart Hands Technician
Location: Ashburn, VA Work Schedule: Onsite Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, with a biweekly on-call rotation for after-hours and weekend support.
Position Status: Full-Time Contract
Position Description:
Seneca Resources is seeking a skilled Data Center Smart Hands Technician to provide hands-on technical support for critical data center infrastructure in Ashburn, VA. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with server installation, rack and stack, structured cabling, hardware troubleshooting, equipment replacement, decommissioning, asset management, and data center operations. This role serves as the onsite technical resource supporting remote engineering teams, customers, vendors, and data center operations personnel. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced enterprise or government data center environment, following established operational, security, safety, and change-management procedures while ensuring reliable operation of critical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform hands-on data center operations and Smart Hands support for servers, network devices, storage systems, and related infrastructure.
  • Install, rack, stack, cable, configure, replace, relocate, and decommission servers, networking equipment, storage devices, and other IT hardware.
  • Perform structured cabling activities, including patch panel management, cable routing, labeling, cable tracing, and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, connectivity, and physical infrastructure issues in coordination with remote network, systems, storage, and infrastructure engineering teams.
  • Execute equipment installations, hardware replacements, break/fix activities, migrations, refreshes, and deployments.
  • Conduct physical inspections of data center equipment and infrastructure and escalate issues affecting availability or operational performance.
  • Provide onsite support for remote engineering teams by executing approved technical procedures and reporting results accurately.
  • Coordinate and escort vendors, contractors, customers, and service providers within controlled data center environments.
  • Maintain accurate asset inventories, equipment records, rack elevations, cabling documentation, and work logs.
  • Create, update, and close service tickets in accordance with established operational procedures and service-level requirements.
  • Follow change management, incident management, security, safety, and data center operational procedures.
  • Support infrastructure projects including hardware refreshes, technology migrations, deployments, and data center upgrades.
  • Coordinate activities with Data Center Operations, customers, vendors, and remote technical teams to minimize service disruption.
  • Participate in a biweekly after-hours/weekend on-call rotation to support critical data center operations.
  • Maintain a professional, safety-conscious, and customer-focused approach when working around mission-critical infrastructure.

Required Skills/Education:
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience supporting enterprise or government data center environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with server installation, rack and stack, hardware replacement, cabling, decommissioning, and physical infrastructure support.
  • Hands-on experience working with servers, network equipment, storage systems, racks, cabinets, and data center hardware.
  • Strong knowledge of structured cabling, patch panels, cable routing, labeling, cable management, and documentation best practices.
  • Experience troubleshooting server and hardware issues under the direction of remote Systems Administrators, Network Engineers, Storage Engineers, or Infrastructure Engineers.
  • Ability to safely handle and install data center equipment while following established procedures and safety requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple work requests and priorities in a mission-critical environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, vendors, engineers, and Data Center Operations teams.
  • Experience documenting technical activities, hardware changes, troubleshooting steps, and completed work.
  • Ability to work onsite Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.
  • Ability to participate in a biweekly on-call rotation, including after-hours and weekend support.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust Clearance and any required agency clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with ServiceNow or similar IT Service Management (ITSM) and ticketing platforms.
  • Familiarity with IT asset management, inventory tracking, and Configuration Management Database (CMDB) processes.
  • Experience supporting data center migrations, hardware refreshes, infrastructure deployments, and technology upgrades.
  • Knowledge of data center standards, physical infrastructure best practices, and power/cooling fundamentals.
  • Understanding of change management, incident management, and problem management processes.
  • Familiarity with enterprise data center environments and mission-critical infrastructure operations.
  • Experience working within government, federal, or regulated data center environments.
  • Familiarity with rack elevation diagrams, equipment inventories, cable schedules, and data center documentation.
  • Strong customer-service mindset and ability to collaborate effectively with distributed technical teams.
