Professional Sabbatical information

How can taking a professional sabbatical benefit my long-term career prospects?

A professional sabbatical can offer you a valuable opportunity to recharge, acquire new skills, or gain fresh perspectives that may enhance your future work performance. Many employers recognize the benefits of sabbaticals, such as increased creativity, reduced burnout, and improved problem-solving abilities upon return. During your sabbatical, you can pursue further education, volunteer, or work on personal projects, all of which can add depth to your resume and make you more competitive for advancement or new roles. Careful planning and clear communication with your employer can help ensure a smooth transition both before and after your sabbatical.

What is a professional sabbatical?

A professional sabbatical is an extended period away from work, typically granted by an employer, that allows employees to pursue personal or professional development, travel, research, or rest. Unlike regular vacation, sabbaticals are usually longer, ranging from a few weeks to a year, and may be paid or unpaid depending on the organization’s policy. The goal is to provide employees with time to recharge, gain new skills, or explore interests that can ultimately benefit both the individual and the company upon their return.

Goodwill strongly believes it is essential to raise education attainment levels in Indiana. Not only are the lifetime earnings of high school graduates significantly higher than those of dropouts, children of high school graduates are 50% less likely to drop out of high school than the children of dropouts are. Goodwill provides opportunities for adults (The Excel Center) and youth (Indianapolis Metropolitan High School).

The Excel Center Model

The Excel Center is operated by Goodwill Education Initiatives, Inc., a not-for-profit organization formed by Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana.

Recognizing that nearly a half million working-age Hoosiers lack a high school diploma, Goodwill opened The Excel Center for adults in 2010. The Excel Center is a tuition-free public high school for adults offering an Indiana Core 40 high school diploma.
