Job description

Sr. Off-road Development Engineer
  • Off-road focused software value added feature calibration owner
  • Organize & own the off-road and traction performance development for North American Market Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles
  • Be a major contributor to this multidisciplinary group focusing on longitudinal traction performance development through AWD & PE system calibration and on developing & validating hardware required to achieve the off-road performance target established for each vehicle program in North America.
  • The group's main function of testing, calibrating, and developing the off-road and traction performance of HMG vehicles aligns with our corporate goal of delivering the best vehicles for the North American customer through regional technical leadership and global collaboration.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Schedule and calibrate for the off-road and traction performance development group involved in the testing, development, and calibration of vehicle integrated off-road and AWD performance in all weather, road, and terrain conditions in North America:
    • Off-Road performance integration and optimization
    • Traction performance related hardware and software performance development
    • AWD and driveline hardware and software performance development
    • BEV multi motor PE traction performance development
    • Off-road related hardware specification development and validation: Protection/Safety/Suspension/Tire/Brake/Body & Structure
  • Assist with performance targets, and hardware specification requirements.
  • Produce excellent software calibration for the development of off-road and traction performance. Including; Traction control, AWD, and other value added functions
  • Understand the automotive off-road and trail market, through past experience, and staying up to date on customer expectations, do determine areas of improvement.
  • Organize and work independently to perform calibrations and meet deadlines while achieving performance targets.
  • Plan and manage engineering resources include assets, vehicles, calibration reports, physical and software vehicle updates, and support vehicles.
  • Perform vehicle test events including proving ground tests, off-road venue tests, and cross-functional seasonal tests (hot/cold).
  • Stay current on competitors' vehicles and technologies with regards to AWD and slip control strategies.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams such as chassis, powertrain, and software groups to ensure seamless integration of off-road and traction performance features.
  • Work with suppliers and partners (external and internal) for hardware and software development alignment.
  • Facilitate regular meetings and coordinate in a professional matter with positive attitude.
  • Collaboration and share knowledge throughout the division and with counterparts in R&D Headquarters in Korea.
  • Manage the creation and presentation of clear & concise project status and technical reports.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field of study
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in the automotive industry
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in vehicle dynamics, controls, off-road, and traction performance development
  • 3+ years of experience managing calibration and schedules.
  • 3+ years of pre-production automotive testing (preferably including winter and off-site testing)
  • Exceptional attitude and enthusiasm for automotive adventure
  • Experience with traction control, AWD and EV motor slip control
  • Powertrain calibration experience
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics, control systems, and AWD system performance development
  • Acceptable computer skills and experience in in-vehicle off-road performance measurement
  • Experience in software root cause analysis and problem-solving methods
  • Good written communication and presentation skills
  • Flexibility in handling multiple projects and changing priorities
  • Capacity to safely manage off-site test trips where vehicles may get stuck and assist in the safe recovery of those vehicles
  • Data Acquisition software and calibration software (INCA, CANape, CANaylizer, etc.)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
  • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record
  • Documented professional off-road vehicle driving experience - Preferred
  • Able to work in a culturally diverse team environment and in harsh climate conditions & conditions (Winter -40F, Summer +120F, altitude up to 14,000 ft)
  • Able to assist in the recovery of vehicles and help spot drivers through obstacles
  • Travel up to 30%, up to 3 weeks in duration at a time, domestically and internationally to support product development, testing, and calibration.
