Professional Network Automation Engineer information

What is a professional network automation engineer?

A Professional Network Automation Engineer is an IT specialist who designs, develops, and implements automated solutions for managing, configuring, and maintaining computer networks. They use programming languages and automation tools to streamline network operations, reduce human error, and improve efficiency. These engineers often work with technologies such as Python, Ansible, or Cisco DevNet, and collaborate with network architects and administrators to ensure reliable and scalable network infrastructure. Their expertise helps organizations rapidly deploy new services, enforce compliance, and troubleshoot issues with minimal manual intervention.

What are some common challenges faced by professional network automation engineers when integrating automation into existing network infrastructures?

Professional Network Automation Engineers often encounter challenges such as legacy hardware that lacks modern automation support, inconsistent device configurations, and resistance to change from teams accustomed to manual processes. Successfully integrating automation requires careful planning, robust testing, and collaboration with network operations and security teams to ensure reliability and compliance. Overcoming these obstacles typically involves a phased approach, clear documentation, and ongoing training to help teams adapt to new tools and workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional network automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Network Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in network protocols, scripting languages like Python, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Cisco DNA Center, and certifications like Cisco DevNet or CCNP are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in this field. These competencies ensure efficient network operations, minimize errors, and support seamless collaboration within IT teams.

What is the difference between Professional Network Automation Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectProfessional Network Automation EngineerNetwork Engineer

Job description

Meta is seeking a Network Engineer to join the Foundation and Support team, focused on the deployment, operations, and lifecycle management of enterprise network services (ENS) that underpin Meta's site infrastructure. In this role, you will plan, deploy, and operationalize network systems that support Meta's physical sites globally, ensuring reliable connectivity and service continuity across campus and facility environments. You will drive incident response, change management, and cross-functional collaboration with vendors and internal teams, while leveraging AIOps and automation to enhance network reliability and operational efficiency.
Network Engineer, Foundation & Support Responsibilities:
  • Plan and execute end-to-end deployment of enterprise network services across Meta's physical sites, including LAN, WAN, wireless, and access layer infrastructure
  • Evaluate site-specific network requirements and design deployment architectures that align with foundation infrastructure standards and capacity targets
  • Lead incident response for network outages, performing root cause analysis, coordinating remediation efforts, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Drive change management processes for network infrastructure updates, ensuring proper review, testing, and rollout procedures are followed
  • Collaborate with vendors, site operations, facilities, and cross-functional infrastructure teams to coordinate network initiatives and resolve complex issues
  • Develop and maintain deployment runbooks, network topology documentation, and configuration standards for enterprise site services
  • Leverage AIOps tools and automation to accelerate network provisioning, anomaly detection, configuration validation, and operational reporting
  • Analyze network performance data and incident trends to inform proactive improvements to site network reliability and deployment quality
  • Advise cross-functional partners on complex site network matters, including capacity planning, technology refresh cycles, and deployment sequencing
  • Track deployment milestones and operational metrics, surfacing risks early and communicating progress to stakeholders and leadership

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience leading incident response and troubleshooting for network outages in enterprise environments
  • 6+ years of experience in network engineering, with a focus on enterprise network deployment, operations, and site services infrastructure
  • Experience coordinating with vendors and cross-functional teams including facilities, site operations, and infrastructure engineering
  • 6+ years of experience designing, deploying, and operating LAN, WAN, and wireless network environments at scale across multiple physical sites
  • Experience with network configuration and provisioning automation using scripting languages such as Python or Ansible

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Industry certifications in network engineering such as CCNP, CCIE, or equivalent demonstrating depth in enterprise networking technologies
  • Experience with AIOps platforms, network observability tooling, and automation frameworks used to enhance operational efficiency and incident detection
  • Experience deploying enterprise network services in large-scale campus or data center environments, including structured cabling, access switching, and wireless access point infrastructure
  • Experience developing or refining network automation pipelines that reduce manual provisioning effort and configuration drift
  • Experience with change management processes and ITSM tools for network infrastructure updates
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
