How much do professional investor jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for professional investor in the United States is $69,759.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,500.00 and $90,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional investor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Investor, you need a strong understanding of financial markets, investment analysis, and portfolio management, often backed by a degree in finance or economics. Proficiency with financial modeling tools, Bloomberg terminals, and holding certifications like CFA is highly valued. Critical thinking, risk tolerance, and strong decision-making abilities are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure informed investment decisions, effective risk management, and consistent portfolio growth in dynamic markets.

What is a professional investor?

A professional investor is an individual or institution that invests capital in various financial markets as their primary occupation. These investors typically have advanced knowledge of investment strategies, market analysis, and risk management. Professional investors may include portfolio managers, hedge fund managers, venture capitalists, and private equity professionals. They are often subject to regulatory standards and may have access to investment opportunities not available to the general public. Their goal is to achieve returns for themselves or their clients while effectively managing risk.

How much does a professional investor make?

A professional investor's salary varies widely based on experience, location, and performance, but many earn from $100,000 to over $1 million annually, especially those managing large funds or with successful track records. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and profit-sharing, and requires strong analytical skills and industry certifications like the CFA.

What does a professional investor do?

A professional investor manages investment portfolios on behalf of clients or firms, analyzing financial markets, assessing risks, and making buy or sell decisions to achieve financial goals. They often use financial analysis tools, stay informed about market trends, and may hold certifications such as CFA or CFP. Their work involves research, strategic planning, and monitoring investments regularly.

What is the difference between Professional Investor vs Financial Analyst?

AspectProfessional InvestorFinancial Analyst
Required CredentialsOften requires certifications like CFA, CFP, or equivalent experienceTypically requires a degree in finance, accounting, or related field; CFA is common but not mandatory
Work EnvironmentInvests in markets, manages portfolios, and makes investment decisionsAnalyzes financial data, prepares reports, and provides investment recommendations
Employer & Industry UsageHired by investment firms, hedge funds, or as independent investorsEmployed by banks, asset management firms, or corporations for financial analysis

While both roles involve finance and investment activities, a Professional Investor primarily manages investments and makes market decisions, whereas a Financial Analyst focuses on analyzing data to support investment choices. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the finance industry.

How does a professional investor typically work with analysts and portfolio managers to make informed investment decisions?

Professional Investors often collaborate closely with analysts and portfolio managers to evaluate investment opportunities and manage risk. Analysts provide in-depth research and data on companies, industries, and market trends, while portfolio managers align these insights with broader investment strategies. As a Professional Investor, you'll participate in regular meetings to discuss findings, challenge assumptions, and contribute your own market perspectives. This team-based approach ensures that decisions are well-informed and aligned with the firm's goals, fostering both individual growth and shared success.

Job description

Company Description

It started with a simple idea: what if surgery could be less invasive and recovery less painful? Nearly 30 years later, that question still fuels everything we do at Intuitive. As a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery and minimally invasive care, our technologies-like the da Vinci surgical system and Ion-have transformed how care is delivered for millions of patients worldwide.

We're a team of engineers, clinicians, and innovators united by one purpose: to make surgery smarter, safer, and more human. Every day, our work helps care teams perform with greater precision and patients recover faster, improving outcomes around the world.

The problems we solve demand creativity, rigor, and collaboration. The work is challenging, but deeply meaningful-because every improvement we make has the potential to change a life.

If you're ready to contribute to something bigger than yourself and help transform the future of healthcare, you'll find your purpose here.

Job Description

Job Description

Intuitive Ventures is seeking a driven and intellectually curious investment professional to join our team as an Investor. This role sits at the heart of our deal-making engine - sourcing compelling opportunities, leading rigorous due diligence, managing portfolio relationships, and contributing to the fund's evolving investment thesis.

Candidates will be evaluated and placed at the appropriate level based on experience, demonstrated track record, and scope of prior responsibility. Both levels require a hands-on operator with strong analytical instincts, a developing network, and the drive to build proprietary deal flow.

Key Responsibilities

Due Diligence & Investment Committee

  • Lead specific due diligence workstreams including market sizing, customer references, GLG calls, and financial modeling
  • Draft high-quality investment memos for senior review and IC preparation; own deal mechanics from term sheet through close (P5)
  • Coordinate legal and technical reviews under partner guidance; synthesize findings across workstreams

Pipeline & Deal Sourcing

  • Independently source and qualify early-stage investment opportunities through outreach and ecosystem engagement
  • Maintain and update the deal pipeline database; conduct initial outreach to founders and screen inbound deals against fund criteria
  • Lead initial founder meetings and make prioritization recommendations
  • Proactively develop co-investor and ecosystem partner relationships

Portfolio Management

  • Serve as day-to-day point of contact for assigned portfolio companies; track key milestones and flag material risks to the senior team
  • Coordinate introductions between portfolio companies and internal business units and external networks
  • Support founders on introductions, recruiting, business development, and resource access
  • Escalate risks proactively and track performance against board-approved milestones

Strategic Landscape & Thesis Development

  • Develop sector overviews, competitive landscape maps, and market intelligence across assigned focus areas
  • Present landscape findings to the broader investment team on a regular cadence
  • Produce detailed landscape analyses that inform new investments and portfolio strategy

Conferences, Competitive Intelligence & Reporting

  • Attend relevant industry conferences; build foundational network and identify emerging companies
  • Maintain competitive intelligence trackers across assigned verticals
  • Lead quarterly reporting for assigned portfolio companies including KPI analysis and commentary
  • Represent the fund at conferences; own CI tracking and contribute to fund-level reporting
Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • MBA or equivalent advanced degree
  • 3-7 years of post-graduate experience in venture capital, investment banking, private equity, management consulting, or a relevant operating role
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to build financial models, conduct market analysis, and synthesize complex information into clear investment recommendations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to draft polished memos and present findings with conviction
  • Self-directed with high ownership mentality; able to manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment

Preferred

  • Prior experience in or deep familiarity with one or more of the fund's focus areas
  • Existing relationships within the venture ecosystem - founders, co-investors, accelerators, or corporate development teams
  • Experience supporting or managing portfolio company relationships
