Physical Therapist – Float

Main Function

Plans and implements individualized treatment programs based on the principles and practices of Physical Therapy. Collaborates closely with an interdisciplinary treatment team. The Staff Physical Therapist reports to the Clinical Coordinator of Rehab Services.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Evaluation & Treatment Planning

  • Reviews requisitions for Physical Therapy
  • Interviews patients and evaluates their physical condition and needs
  • Develops customized corrective exercise and treatment programs

Therapeutic Intervention

  • Determines appropriate equipment use, application, and body positioning
  • Administers treatments including exercise, gait training, soft tissue mobility, whirlpool, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, ice packs, electrical stimulation, and traction
  • Educates patients on program components and proper use of assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, canes, braces, and prosthetics
  • Adjusts treatment plans based on patient progress
  • Consults with physicians as needed regarding treatment alternatives

Documentation & Communication

  • Completes required documentation including evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries
  • Communicates effectively with nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated care

Team Support & Leadership

  • Provides direction to support staff involved in patient care
  • Assumes responsibilities of Senior Therapists in their absence

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Adheres to departmental policies, procedures, and quality initiatives
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff
  • Follows all hospital safety protocols, including fire safety and disaster procedures
  • Uses equipment safely and ensures proper working condition
  • Complies with Universal Precautions and uses required protective equipment
  • Reports unsafe conditions and participates in safety programs

Operational Support

  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies
  • Participates in meetings and committees as required
  • Assists with patient transport when needed

Professional Development

  • Engages in ongoing education, workshops, and professional development opportunities
  • Completes all mandatory annual training

Patient-Centered Care

  • Provides age-appropriate care across all populations: neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric
  • Delivers compassionate, attentive care focused on both physical and psychological patient needs
  • Maintains clear communication to ensure a secure and positive patient experience
Education Requirements
  • Must be licensed, or eligible for licensure, to practice Physical Therapy in New York State at time of hire
Experience
  • Hospital experience preferred
Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire
Physical Demands

This role requires physical activity, including lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to:

  • Lift at least 30 pounds independently
  • Lift up to 150 pounds with assistance

Elmira is a charming small town in western New York, located along the Pennsylvania border just south of the Finger Lakes region. Nearby Corning—home to Corning Glass Works—is just 14 miles away.
