Professional Fantasy Sports Developer information

What is a professional fantasy sports developer?

A Professional Fantasy Sports Developer is a software engineer or programmer who specializes in designing, building, and maintaining platforms or apps for fantasy sports. They work on creating user interfaces, implementing game logic, managing real-time data feeds, and ensuring site security and scalability. These developers often collaborate with product managers, designers, and data analysts to deliver engaging and reliable fantasy sports experiences for users. Their work is critical in bringing fantasy sports leagues, contests, and draft games to life across web and mobile platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional fantasy sports developer?

To thrive as a Professional Fantasy Sports Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), a solid understanding of sports statistics, and a background in software development or computer science. Familiarity with web frameworks, database management systems, and knowledge of third-party sports data APIs are typically required, while certifications in software development can be advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are important soft skills that help developers design engaging and reliable platforms. These skills ensure the creation of robust, user-friendly fantasy sports applications that deliver real-time experiences and meet both user expectations and industry regulations.

What are some common challenges professional fantasy sports developers face when integrating real-time data feeds into their platforms?

One of the main challenges Professional Fantasy Sports Developers encounter is ensuring the seamless integration of accurate, real-time sports data from third-party providers. These feeds are essential for delivering up-to-date player statistics and game outcomes, but can be prone to latency, API changes, or inconsistencies. Developers must implement robust error handling, data validation, and synchronization mechanisms to maintain a reliable user experience. Additionally, coordinating with operations and customer support teams is crucial to quickly address any data discrepancies and keep users informed.

Job description

At PrizePicks, we are the fastest-growing sports company in North America, as recognized by Inc. 5000. As the leading platform for Daily Fantasy Sports, we cover a diverse range of sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA, and Esports titles like League of Legends and Counter-Strike. Our team of over 550 employees thrives in an inclusive culture that values individuals from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their level of sports fandom. Ready to reimagine the DFS industry together?
We are seeking a Product Designer with an exceptional eye for visual craft and interaction design to own the GamePlay Live Sweat and Tracking experience. This is not just about building systems; it's about building new ways to keep members in the moment, turning the live experience into the reason they come back, and pushing the boundary of what can be done in the Daily Fantasy Sports industry. You will be the force behind the look, feel, and interaction of everything from the play-by-play feed to cashout to the moment an entry settles - the surfaces where members spend the most time, and where craft and clarity directly drive retention.
What you'll do:
  • Drive End-to-End Delivery: Own the full design lifecycle in the Live Tracking domain, from initial requirements gathering through ship and post-launch iteration. This means understanding the mechanics underneath the surface and the business drivers behind them well enough to shape the systems themselves, not just the screens on top of them.
  • Build & Refine Interfaces: Stay hands-on. You'll prototype at high fidelity and execute at the pixel level, because on Live Tracking surfaces the difference between good and premium is in the transitions, the timing, and the details.
  • Develop & Ship New Systems: Use AI, rapid prototyping, and iterative design to conceptualize and launch real-time surfaces that move as fast as the game does.
  • Raise the Design Bar: Hold quality high through consistent critique, active contribution to our design systems, and craft standards that hold up across every visual and interaction detail in the domain.
  • Drive Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build real partnerships with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Social Design. Live surfaces touch more teams than any other area of the product, so you'll be the one holding the line between business goals and a tracking experience that stays coherent for the member.
What you have:
  • 4+ years of product design experience, with a portfolio that showcases mastery in visual craft, interaction design, and strategic thinking. Your work should demonstrate a clear understanding of how to create emotionally engaging digital experiences.
  • Excel in Visual and Interaction Design: A mastery of visual design principles (typography, layout, color theory) and a passion for motion and micro-interactions that enhance usability and create delight. You have a "pixel-perfect" mindset.
  • Strategic and Conceptual Thinking: Proven ability to translate abstract business goals and user needs into a compelling design vision and a pragmatic, phased execution plan, from MVP to future-state iterations. Ability to create simple experiences out of complex and interconnected systems.
  • Deep Empathy and User Focus: An innate ability to understand user motivations and behaviors, considering usability and accessibility not as a checklist but as a core tenet of exceptional design. Utilize research, analytics, and customer insights to build your knowledge of our customers.
  • Technical Acumen: A foundational understanding of frontend technologies and the ability to foster a seamless, collaborative handoff process with engineering partners. Utilize AI to bridge gaps and build functional prototypes and demos.
  • Industry Interest: Genuine interest in sports and the Daily Fantasy and prediction markets space. You watch games. You know what it means to sweat a result down to the final possession, and you have opinions about which live sports products get it right and which don't.
What makes you stand out:
  • Experience leadingB2C projects with a mobile-first design mentality.
  • Experience supporting gaming, Daily Fantasy Sports, prediction markets, or social product design projects.
Where you'll live:
  • We're looking for candidates based in Atlanta or New York.

Benefits you'll receive:
In addition to your great compensation package, full-time employees will be eligible for the following perks:
  • Company-subsidized medical, dental, & vision plans
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Annual bonus
  • Flexible PTO to encourage a healthy work/life balance (2 weeks STRONGLY encouraged!)
  • Generous paid leave programs, including 16-week paid parental leave and disability benefits
  • Workplace flexibility and modern work schedules focused on getting the job done, not hours clocked
  • Company-wide in-person events and team outings
  • Lifestyle enhancement program
  • Company equipment provided (Windows & Mac options)
  • Annual performance reviews with opportunities for growth and career development

You must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
PrizePicks is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.
