Professional Driver information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and vehicle inspection tools is typically required. Reliability, strong customer service, and stress management are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient transportation of goods or passengers and compliance with regulatory requirements.

What is a professional driver?

Professional drivers race a variety of vehicles at a highly competitive level, spanning many classes and divisions. There are also different types of tracks and terrains they race on. Professional drivers race for the chance to earn prize money based on the place they finish in. They also seek sponsorship from companies to help fund the operation required to keep racing vehicles functioning correctly. Many professional drivers find success as part of a team or are picked up by sponsors.

What is the difference between Professional Driver vs Commercial Driver?

AspectProfessional DriverCommercial Driver
CredentialsDriver's license, possibly specialized endorsementsCommercial Driver's License (CDL) often required
Work EnvironmentVaries from personal vehicles to company fleetsTypically commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, or delivery vans
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across transportation, logistics, and personal servicesPrimarily in freight, passenger transport, and logistics industries

While both roles involve operating vehicles, a Professional Driver may include personal or non-commercial driving, whereas a Commercial Driver specifically operates commercial vehicles requiring a CDL. The key differences lie in licensing requirements, work environment, and industry usage, with Commercial Drivers often working in freight and passenger transport sectors.

What are some common challenges faced by professional drivers, and how can they be managed?

Professional drivers often encounter challenges such as long hours on the road, navigating heavy traffic, and adhering to strict delivery schedules. Managing fatigue is crucial, so it's important to take regular breaks and prioritize rest. Handling unexpected situations like vehicle breakdowns or route changes also requires problem-solving skills and adaptability. Building good communication with dispatchers and clients can help address issues promptly and maintain smooth operations.

Position Summary

Turn information into opportunity.

Every successful project starts with a well-built estimate.

As a GC Estimator at Eagle Builders, you'll analyze drawings, specifications, and project requirements to develop accurate project costs that help our team make informed decisions and win work. Your ability to identify risks, solve problems, and uncover opportunities will directly impact project success before construction even begins.

We're looking for someone who enjoys digging into details, thinking critically, and finding answers others might overlook.

While experience in estimating or construction is an asset, it isn't required. If you're analytical, eager to learn, and willing to put in the work, we'll provide the training and support to help you build a successful career in estimating.

What You'll Do

  • Review drawings, specifications, and tender documents
  • Perform quantity take-offs and prepare detailed cost estimates
  • Prepare project budgets, pricing, and quotations
  • Communicate with vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal teams to gather pricing and project information
  • Identify potential risks, cost drivers, and value-engineering opportunities
  • Review project designs and specifications for practicality and cost-effectiveness
  • Ensure estimates are accurate, complete, and submitted within required deadlines
  • Support project teams throughout the pre-construction process
  • Maintain estimating data, records, and documentation
  • Follow company policies, procedures, and established estimating processes

What We Are Looking For

  • Analytical - enjoys breaking down complex information and finding solutions
  • Detail-driven - catches discrepancies and missing information others may overlook
  • Organized - manages multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
  • Accountable - takes ownership of work and follows through on commitments
  • Problem-solver - approaches challenges with curiosity and critical thinking
  • Continuous learner - eager to expand construction and estimating knowledge
  • Team-oriented - works effectively with a variety of personalities and departments

Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Available Monday to Friday, with occasional overtime as required
  • Minimum 44 hours per week
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Comfortable working with numbers, calculations, and technical information
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment

Assets

  • Experience estimating construction projects
  • Experience reviewing drawings, specifications, and tender documents
  • Knowledge of commercial, industrial, or precast concrete construction
  • Familiarity with construction methods and terminology
  • Experience using estimating, drafting, or construction software
  • Knowledge of Autodesk products such as Revit or AutoCAD
  • Construction-related education, training, or practical experience in construction estimating

What Eagle Builders Offers

  • Competitive wages based on experience, with regular evaluations
  • 6% vacation pay, statutory holiday pay, health coverage, and wellness support
  • Sundays off and a culture that values time with family
  • Employee events, clothing program, and additional employee perks
  • Opportunities for professional growth
  • Personality and behavioural assessments designed to help individuals and teams succeed

Every project begins with a number. If you enjoy solving problems, uncovering opportunities, and building accurate estimates that help win work, join us and help shape what gets built next.

Thank you for your interest in Eagle Builders. Only those selected to move forward will be contacted.
