Matura Farrington is working closely with a global Am law firm in its search for a Professional Development Manager to support attorney development initiatives within its Los Angeles office. This role partners closely with practice group leadership, attorneys, and administrative teams to drive attorney performance, staffing, training, onboarding, and career development efforts.


The ideal candidate brings a combination of legal industry experience, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization. This is a highly visible role requiring professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.


Position Overview

The Talent Development Manager serves as a strategic partner to attorneys and firm leadership, supporting professional development, performance management, staffing coordination, and associate engagement. This role works closely with practice group leaders to ensure attorneys receive meaningful development opportunities and are positioned for long-term success.


Key Responsibilities

Attorney Development & Performance Management

  • Build strong relationships with attorneys and practice group leadership to understand business needs, workloads, and development objectives
  • Participate in attorney performance evaluation processes and help ensure consistent delivery of developmental feedback
  • Monitor attorney performance, workload distribution, and professional growth opportunities
  • Counsel attorneys on career development, advancement goals, and professional growth strategies

Staffing & Work Allocation

  • Partner with practice group leadership to coordinate attorney staffing across ongoing and new matters
  • Recommend assignments based on business needs, attorney utilization, skill development, and career objectives
  • Monitor workloads and assist with balancing assignments across teams

Training & Professional Development

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to design and implement attorney training and development programs
  • Support the development of practice-specific learning initiatives and professional skills programming
  • Assist with mentoring, coaching, and engagement initiatives that support attorney retention and development

Associate Lifecycle Management

  • Manage onboarding and integration of new attorneys, including lateral and entry-level hires
  • Support attorney transitions and conduct exit interviews when appropriate
  • Facilitate initiatives designed to strengthen engagement, communication, and team cohesion

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Partner with attorneys, administrative leaders, and business professionals to support talent initiatives
  • Serve as a trusted resource on attorney development matters
  • Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives related to attorney talent management


Qualifications

Education

Juris Doctor (JD) required

Experience

  • 4–8 years of law firm, attorney development, legal talent, professional development, or related experience
  • Experience supporting corporate, transactional, litigation, or other legal practice groups preferred
  • Experience advising attorneys or legal professionals on career development and performance management strongly preferred
