What is a professional counselor?

Professional counselors are licensed mental health professionals who help individuals, couples, and groups address emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues. They use various therapeutic techniques to assist clients in managing stress, coping with life changes, improving relationships, and achieving personal growth. Professional counselors work in a variety of settings, including schools, private practices, hospitals, and community organizations. Their goal is to provide support and guidance to help clients lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Counselor, you need expertise in psychological assessment, therapeutic intervention, and a master's degree in counseling or a related field, along with state licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), diagnostic tools like the DSM-5, and ongoing continuing education or certifications are typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and cultural sensitivity help counselors build trust and rapport with clients. These skills and credentials are crucial for providing effective, ethical support that fosters client well-being and positive outcomes.

What are some common challenges professional counselors face when working with clients, and how can they effectively manage them?

Another frequent challenge is addressing resistance or reluctance from clients who may be hesitant to open up. To manage these situations, counselors use active listening skills, establish clear expectations, and practice self-care to prevent burnout. Ongoing supervision and peer support also help counselors process difficult cases and maintain their own well-being.

At Oceanic Counseling Group, we believe great therapy happens when clinicians feel supported, valued, and empowered to focus on what they do best—client care. We’re excited to add a licensed therapist to support our upcoming Anderson, SC location.
This position will begin as a fully virtual role, with a planned transition to in-office services once our Anderson office opens in Spring 2026. This is a great opportunity for a clinician who values flexibility now and is interested in being part of a growing local presence in the Anderson community.
If you’re looking for a practice where you can focus on clinical work while a strong administrative team handles the logistics, this may be a great fit.
What the Role Involves
  • Providing outpatient mental health therapy in a virtual setting initially
  • Transitioning to in-office services in Anderson, SC upon office opening (Spring 2026)
  • Treating a diverse caseload aligned with your strengths and clinical interests
  • Maintaining a full-time schedule with flexibility built in
  • Collaborating with a team that values communication, ethical practice, and mutual support
  • Meeting standard licensure, credentialing, and background requirements
What We Offer Clinicians
  • Autonomy with support: You set your schedule; we manage scheduling, billing, verification of benefits, and administrative support
  • W-2 employment: Stable income without contractor tax stress
  • Competitive compensation: Hourly pay that reflects experience and clinical skill
  • Comprehensive benefits: PTO, health/dental/vision insurance, 401(k) with 3% match, life insurance, CEU opportunities, and more
  • Consistent referrals: A steady flow of clients to help you build and sustain a full caseload—no self-marketing required
Who We Are
Oceanic Counseling Group is one of South Carolina’s trusted outpatient mental health practices, with established locations across the state and continued growth planned. Our reputation is built on quality care, strong community relationships, and a culture where clinicians feel genuinely supported.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
If you’re a licensed therapist in South Carolina seeking flexibility, long-term stability, and the opportunity to help grow services in the Anderson area—we’d love to connect.
