Professional Bus Operator information

What is a professional bus operator?

Professional bus operators are trained individuals responsible for safely driving buses along designated routes to transport passengers. They ensure passenger safety, adhere to traffic laws, assist riders with boarding and fare payment, and maintain schedules. In addition to driving, they often provide customer service, answer questions about routes, and handle emergency situations if they arise. Professional bus operators may work for public transit agencies, schools, or private companies, and typically require a commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger endorsements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional bus operator?

To thrive as a Professional Bus Operator, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), safe driving skills, and a strong understanding of traffic laws and routes. Familiarity with vehicle inspection procedures, fare collection systems, and sometimes GPS or scheduling software is often required. Excellent customer service, patience, and strong communication skills help operators interact effectively with passengers and handle challenging situations calmly. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring passenger safety, maintaining schedules, and providing a positive experience for riders.

How does a professional bus operator typically handle challenging passenger situations during a route?

Professional Bus Operators are trained to manage a variety of passenger interactions, including handling disputes, fare issues, or disruptions, with calm professionalism. They follow specific protocols provided by their transit agency, which may include de-escalation techniques and clear communication. Operators are supported by dispatch teams and, when necessary, security personnel to ensure safety for all passengers. Building rapport and staying attentive to the needs of diverse riders are important aspects of the role, making strong interpersonal skills valuable in this position.

We're a team that believes in the power of reliable transportation to transform daily routines and empower our city. If you're ready to make a real impact, one friendly ride at a time, you've found your destination!

What You'll Do:

This isn't just a driving job – it's about being a vital part of our community's infrastructure. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Navigating the City: Expertly operate assigned MetroLink Tulsa vehicles on a safe, courteous, and timely route, adhering to the posted schedule. You'll be the face of MetroLink Tulsa, ensuring passengers reach their destinations comfortably.
  • Safety First: Maintain constant oversight of current passenger fare for compliance at the bus fare box, ensuring accurate collection and reporting.
  • Customer Service Excellence: Provide friendly, helpful, and courteous assistance to all passengers, including those with disabilities. Answer questions about routes and schedules and provide transfer information. You'll be a trusted resource for our riders.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Be prepared to handle emergency situations efficiently and professionally, ensuring the safety of all onboard.
  • Accessibility Champion: Operate wheelchair lifts and securement devices, assisting passengers with disabilities to ensure a safe and comfortable ride in compliance with ADA regulations.
  • Vehicle Care: Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of your assigned vehicle, meticulously checking safety equipment and reporting any defects.
  • Communication Hub: Maintain constant radio contact with the Operations Supervisor, promptly reporting any incidents, accidents, or mechanical issues.
  • Record Keeping: Accurately complete accident, incident, or vehicle defect reports as needed.
  • Team Collaboration: Work effectively with other MetroLink Tulsa staff to ensure seamless operations and a positive environment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance your skills and knowledge.

We're Looking for Someone Who Is:

  • A Safety Advocate: You prioritize safety above all else, for yourself, your passengers, and the public.
  • A Customer Service Star: You genuinely enjoy helping people and have a positive, patient, and courteous demeanor.
  • Reliable and Punctual: You understand the importance of adhering to schedules and being dependable.
  • A Clear Communicator: You can effectively communicate with passengers, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Adaptable: You can handle unexpected situations calmly and professionally.
  • Physically Capable: You are able to successfully pass DOT physical and additional MetroLink Tulsa requirements, including drug and alcohol screenings. This role requires bending, squatting, climbing steps, and frequent vehicle inspections. You must also be able to sit for long periods, control vehicle operations with both feet, and maneuver in tight spaces. Manual dexterity is essential.

Requirements:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: Must be licensed in the State of Oklahoma and be, at least, 18 years of age with no more than two moving violations in the last three years and no DUIs/DWIs.
  • Licensing: Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Oklahoma Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and Airbrake endorsements. MetroLink Tulsa provides CDL training for qualified candidates.
