Essential Functions

• Understand all company procedures, policies, and practices that is relevant to job position
• Must comply with all safety and OSHA regulations, including lock-out/tag-out procedures within the department
• Licensed to operate a forklift in a safe manner
• Demonstrate a sense of urgency when dealing with line stops or abnormal plant conditions
• Break out other team members and rotate to different positions or to facilitate production as designed by the Supervisor
• Operate the Sheet Turner to flip loads of veneer to ensure proper presentation on the Layup line
• Operate the Core Saw to properly process loads of veneer and cut to the correct length
• Check and ensure that core is the proper width
• Ability to operate the control panels of flying saw and accumulator, as well as servicing and adjusting each when necessary
• Operate the flying saw to ensure that individual panels are cut in the center of the gap to the correct length in a manner to prevent loss of valuable veneer and downfall
• Understand saw blades, diagnosing cuts, and changing blades
• Ability to straighten sheets, patch, remove bad sheets, and monitor machine operations to ensure quality production
• Handle veneer in a manner which ensures that veneer damage is kept to a minimum
• Operate control panels of sheet drop and infeed to include the X-lift
• Mix glue properly according to the recipe and maintain an adequate inventory of glue components
• Maintain an adequate supply of glue to the Layup line, as well as pump mix to designated holding tank and rotate resin storage tank as needed
• Maintain glue quality by checking the temperature and viscosity of glue mix, as well as, accurately recording all required data on the Glue Mixer Log
• Understand load positioning, roll in, X-lift function, tipple pedals, and manual corrections
• Understand ON versus OFF grade
• Feed the line in a manner to maintain quality and unnecessary downtime
• Operate the line stop and tipple advance eye
• Maintain quality by inspecting veneer core quality, thickness, temperature, and moisture content
• Ability to lay core without gaps/laps on the flight chain
• Effectively clean glue tips and maintain glue spreads
• Effectively perform startup and shutdown, as well as operate control panels of pre-press and hot press
• Accurately record and complete all required paperwork for Process Control
• Manage the pre-press, the flow of stacks of unpressed panels, and straighten square up all loads entering the pre-press
• Ability to set up the pre-press to obtain a tight panel consolidation
• Efficiently loads and unloads the hot press 
• Accurately mark all pressed loads for identification
• Practice FIFO (First In, First Out) when pulling veneer from the warehouse to ensure proper rotation
• Properly load cores correctly onto correct core station to prevent falling
• Keep Layup line adequately supplied with cores and sheet in a manner to prevent downtime
• Able to read labels and differentiate between grades and thickness of veneer
• Ability to remove debris and straighten any sheet that is sideways or has been knocked into the wrong bin
• Perform daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks
• Clean any loose veneer around and under all areas within the department to ensure proper functioning and safe working conditions
• Ability to respond quickly to all upset conditions within the department
• Maintain equipment, troubleshoot issues, and assist in preventative maintenance
• Communicate all processing and safety issues to the Supervisor and/or Line Tender
• Employees must also perform any duty deemed necessary by management

Layup Breakouts, who can perform these duties safely and effectively allows the mill to run smoothly. It is imperative that each employee does his or her job to the utmost of their ability.

• Able to work safely around moving mechanical equipment and nip points
• Maintain a high level of cleanliness in work areas

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently
• Must be able to push and pull approximately 25 to 50 pounds frequently
• Ability to stand and walk constantly for up to 8 hours a shift
• Able to monitor and review information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems
• Able to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects
• Able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials
• Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibrations in which certain PPE is required
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
• Capable of working in hot and/or cold environments.
• Able to work beyond or less than normally scheduled work hours.
• Subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.
• Responsible for wearing the required PPE for each job task as specified.
• Responsible for conducting a pre-shift inspection on forklifts, when in operation, prior to the start of the shift or operation of forklift.
