What does a production operations coordinator do?

A Production Operations Coordinator is responsible for managing the day-to-day logistics and administrative tasks involved in production processes, often within industries like film, television, manufacturing, or live events. They coordinate schedules, communicate between different departments, oversee resource allocation, and ensure that production timelines are met. Their role is crucial for keeping projects organized and on track, handling any issues that arise, and supporting the production team to achieve successful outcomes.

How does a production operations coordinator typically collaborate with other departments during a production cycle?

Your role involves ensuring that schedules are aligned, materials are available, and any issues are communicated promptly to prevent delays. Effective communication and organization are key, as you'll often coordinate meetings, track progress, and facilitate solutions to operational challenges. This cross-departmental collaboration helps maintain a smooth workflow and supports timely, quality production outputs.

What is the difference between Production Operations Coordinator vs Production Supervisor?

This role partners closely with procurement, inventory control, manufacturing, quality, engineering, and customer service to keep production plans realistic, executable, and responsive to changing priorities.

What you will be responsible for

  • Build and maintain daily and weekly production schedules for PCB assembly operations, including SMT, hand assembly, test, rework, and final assembly.

  • Monitor work-in-process, line loading, schedule attainment, backlog, and overdue orders.
  • Support new product introduction, engineering change implementation, and prototype-to-production transitions.
  • Analyze planning data and production metrics to improve throughput, reduce delays, and improve on-time delivery.
  • Maintain accurate planning parameters, routings, lead times, and BOM-related planning data in company systems.
  • Communicate schedule changes, constraints, and recovery plans clearly to operations leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Support cycle counting, inventory accuracy, and materials reconciliation efforts as needed.
  • Help drive continuous improvement in planning, scheduling, and production-control processes.
  • Follow company safety, quality, and compliance requirements and support a disciplined manufacturing environment.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain, operations, business, engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience in manufacturing planning may be considered.
  • 5+ years in production planning/scheduling in electronics manufacturing (PCB assembly, SMT, EMS, or semiconductor); NPI and ECO experience a plus.
  • Experience in electronics manufacturing, PCB assembly, EMS, semiconductor, or other high-mix / fast-paced production environments preferred.
  • Strong understanding of ERP/MRP systems, production scheduling, inventory control, and capacity planning.
  • Experience coordinating with procurement, warehouse, manufacturing, and engineering teams.
  • Strong Excel and data-analysis skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret bills of material, routings, demand plans, and work orders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and respond quickly to changes.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across departments.
  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and problem-solving ability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting SMT and PCB assembly operations.
  • Familiarity with high-mix, low-volume and/or low-mix, high-volume production planning.
  • Experience with NPI, ECOs, and controlled manufacturing documentation.
  • APICS/ASCM certification such as CPIM is a plus.
  • Experience with KPI reporting, schedule adherence, and root-cause follow-up on planning misses.
