What is production design?

Production design refers to the process of creating the overall visual look and feel of a film, television show, theater production, or other media project. The production designer collaborates with the director, cinematographer, and other departments to develop sets, locations, props, costumes, and color schemes that support the story and evoke the desired atmosphere. Their work is essential in visually communicating the narrative and helping audiences immerse themselves in the world of the production.

How does a Production Designer typically collaborate with directors and other departments during a film or television project?

Production Designers work closely with directors to establish the visual tone and style of a project, translating the script’s narrative into physical environments. They regularly coordinate with departments such as art, construction, costume, lighting, and props to ensure visual consistency and creative alignment. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the Production Designer oversees the set design process, manages budgets, and ensures that all visual elements support the director’s vision while adhering to project constraints.

What is the difference between Production Design vs Set Designer?

AspectProduction DesignSet Designer
ResponsibilitiesOversees overall visual concept, including sets, costumes, and propsFocuses primarily on designing and building specific sets
CredentialsOften requires a degree in design, theater, or related field; experience in productionTypically has a background in architecture, design, or theater set construction
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with directors, art directors, and production teamsWorks closely with art directors and construction teams on set creation

Production Design involves managing the entire visual aesthetic of a production, while Set Designers focus specifically on designing individual sets. Both roles require creative skills and industry experience, but Production Designers have broader responsibilities overseeing the overall look.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Production Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Production Designer, you need a strong background in art direction, spatial design, and visual storytelling, usually supported by a degree in design, fine arts, or a related field. Familiarity with design software like Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and CAD systems, as well as experience in set construction and budgeting, is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, strong communication, and attention to detail are vital soft skills for developing and executing compelling visual concepts with diverse teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the visual coherence and overall impact of film, television, theater, or advertising productions.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

Production Designer, Brand Creative StudioTHE TEAM

The Netflix Brand Creative Studio (BCS) is our in-house team of Strategists, Creatives, Designers, Producers, and Program Managers. We are the creative collective behind Netflix's most high-profile brand initiatives, developing work that builds passionate fandoms and shapes how the world connects with our brand. Our mission is to strengthen the Netflix brand and drive business value by creating culturally relevant marketing that is as entertaining as our shows, films, games, and experiences. Our studio serves as a centralized partner for a wide range of business-critical areas-spanning Global Brand and Brand Partnerships, Ads, Consumer Products, and live experiences like Netflix House.

As Netflix continues to expand into new business units, formats, and physical experiences, the volume and complexity of design output across the company continues to grow. To support this scale, BCS is evolving its operating model to include a dedicated production design team focused on speed, systems, and consistency, without compromising craft.

THE ROLE

We are seeking a Production Designer to join the Brand Creative Studio. This role is an individual contributor within the production design team, responsible for delivering high-quality, brand-led design output at scale across multiple business functions, including the Netflix Brand, Netflix House, Product Marketing, Consumer Products, and Corporate Communications.

This role reflects a creative agency and design studio model of production design, where designers work within established systems to execute a high volume of work efficiently and thoughtfully. You will partner closely with the Senior Manager, Production Design and cross-functional teams to bring brand strategy and design systems to life across channels, markets, and formats.

A strong portfolio demonstrating solid design fundamentals, attention to detail, and experience working within brand systems is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Production Design & Execution

  • Design and produce high-volume, brand-led assets across a range of outputs, including lower-funnel marketing assets, campaign toolkits, sales materials, and presentation design.

  • Execute work within established brand systems, templates, and production frameworks, ensuring consistency and quality across deliverables.

  • Apply strong design fundamentals to every output, with attention to typography, layout, hierarchy, and clarity.

Cross-Functional Creative Support

  • Collaborate with partners across Brand, Product Marketing, Consumer Products, Netflix House, and Corporate Comms to support a wide range of creative needs.

  • Contribute to presentation design for executive, sales, and high-priority communications where clarity and brand expression are critical.

  • Ensure work is fit-for-purpose across audiences and channels while adhering to Netflix brand standards.

Systems & Workflow Contribution

  • Support the ongoing development and refinement of templates, modular systems, and production workflows.

  • Adapt existing systems to new formats, channels, and use cases as needed.

  • Work efficiently within fast-moving timelines while maintaining a high standard of craft.

Craft, Quality & Growth

  • Uphold quality and attention to detail across all production outputs.

  • Incorporate feedback thoughtfully and iterate quickly.

  • Stay current on best practices in production design, brand systems, and design tooling.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4-6 years of experience in design within a creative agency, design studio, or in-house brand team.

  • Strong foundation in visual design, including typography, layout, hierarchy, and composition.

  • Experience working within established brand systems and templates.

  • Ability to execute high-volume design work efficiently without sacrificing quality.

  • Exposure to a range of outputs, such as marketing assets, toolkits, sales materials, and presentation design.

  • Strong collaboration skills and comfort working with cross-functional partners.

  • Fluency in modern design tools and workflows (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite; motion experience a plus).

  • Clear communicator who is receptive to feedback and eager to learn.

  • Highly organized and comfortable working in fast-paced environments.

  • Interest in growing within a production design or systems-led design practice.
