What is production design?

Production design refers to the process of creating the overall visual look and feel of a film, television show, theater production, or other media project. The production designer collaborates with the director, cinematographer, and other departments to develop sets, locations, props, costumes, and color schemes that support the story and evoke the desired atmosphere. Their work is essential in visually communicating the narrative and helping audiences immerse themselves in the world of the production.

How does a production designer typically collaborate with directors and other departments during a film or television project?

Production Designers work closely with directors to establish the visual tone and style of a project, translating the script’s narrative into physical environments. They regularly coordinate with departments such as art, construction, costume, lighting, and props to ensure visual consistency and creative alignment. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the Production Designer oversees the set design process, manages budgets, and ensures that all visual elements support the director’s vision while adhering to project constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a production designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Production Designer, you need a strong background in art direction, spatial design, and visual storytelling, usually supported by a degree in design, fine arts, or a related field. Familiarity with design software like Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and CAD systems, as well as experience in set construction and budgeting, is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, strong communication, and attention to detail are vital soft skills for developing and executing compelling visual concepts with diverse teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the visual coherence and overall impact of film, television, theater, or advertising productions.

What is the difference between Production Design vs Set Designer?

AspectProduction DesignSet Designer

Production Design involves managing the entire visual aesthetic of a production, while Set Designers focus specifically on designing individual sets. Both roles require creative skills and industry experience, but Production Designers have broader responsibilities overseeing the overall look.

Do production designers get paid well?

Production designers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. In the entertainment and media industries, salaries can range from entry-level to six figures for experienced professionals working on major projects. Skills in design software and a strong portfolio can influence earning potential.

How hard is it to become a production designer?

Becoming a production designer typically requires a combination of education in design or related fields, extensive experience in film, television, or theater production, and strong skills in visual storytelling, set design, and project management. Gaining proficiency with design software and building a professional portfolio are also important steps in the process.

What can you do with a production design degree?

A production design degree prepares individuals to work as production designers in film, television, theater, or advertising, where they create visual concepts and oversee the design of sets, props, and environments. Graduates often collaborate with directors, art directors, and technical teams, using tools like CAD software and understanding set construction, to bring creative visions to life. The role typically requires strong artistic skills, knowledge of materials, and the ability to manage budgets and schedules.

What does a production designer do?

A production designer is responsible for creating the visual concept of a film, television show, or theater production. Job description

Location: HQ - Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Status: Full-time / 100% on-site
Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000 annually
Position Summary: The Production Design Specialist supports the design execution of Kith's retail installations, pop-ups, brand activations, and experiential projects. Reporting to and working under the direction of the Experiential Production & Design Manager, this role translates established creative direction into renderings, technical drawings, production artwork, and fabrication-ready documentation required to bring projects from design through production and installation. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role for someone with strong technical design skills and a deep understanding of materials and fabrication. Working closely with internal teams, fabricators, printers, and production partners, the Production Design Specialist applies that expertise to assess what is buildable, resolve production details, and ensure every design is accurately visualized, prepared for fabrication, and executed to Kith's standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Translate established creative direction into renderings, visualizations, mock-ups, and presentation materials that communicate the look, feel, and spatial experience of each project for internal reviews and partner approvals.
  • Produce 3D models, technical drawings, floor plans, elevations, and dimensioned layouts that translate approved design direction into a buildable, production-ready plan.
  • Prepare print- and production-ready artwork and files for signage, vinyl graphics, environmental branding, wayfinding, packaging, partner lockups, and other experiential applications.
  • Apply working knowledge of materials, substrates, finishes, fabrication methods, and production processes to evaluate feasibility and identify production considerations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop material callouts, finish references, and specification documents, and review proofs, shop drawings, and production files for accuracy and alignment with approved design intent.
  • Support fabrication and production partners by providing clear design documentation, production files, and technical guidance throughout the build process.
  • Revise and refine design work based on feedback from the Experiential Production & Design Manager, escalating significant design changes, substitutions, or deviations from approved direction for review and alignment.
  • Support installations and walkthroughs on-site as needed, assisting with quality-control reviews and helping resolve technical and production details to ensure the build aligns with approved design intent.
  • Maintain organized project files, design assets, templates, and version control, and support recap presentations through layout, formatting, and the organization of project photography and supporting materials.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience producing design and production deliverables for experiential, retail, exhibition, environmental, or scenic design projects, translating established creative direction into built work.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating 3D renderings, environmental graphics, technical documentation, production-ready artwork, and built or physical design work.
  • Advanced proficiency in SketchUp, with the ability to independently create accurate 3D models of physical environments, quick design-development mock-ups, and supporting visualizations that communicate design intent.
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality, presentation-ready renderings using rendering and visualization software such as V-Ray, Enscape, Twinmotion, or similar, suitable for partner presentations and production development.
  • Proven experience translating established creative direction into renderings, presentations, mock-ups, environmental graphics, technical drawings, and production-ready design assets.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), with strong production-file and print-preparation skills.
  • Proven ability to create, read, interpret, and review floor plans, elevations, dimensioned drawings, fabrication drawings, shop drawings, and other technical documentation used to support fabrication and installation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of materials, substrates, finishes, fabrication methods, print production, and installation workflows, with the ability to evaluate design feasibility and create accurate, buildable files.
  • Experience preparing print- and production-ready files for signage, vinyl graphics, environmental branding, packaging, printed collateral, and other physical applications.
  • Experience collaborating with fabricators, printers, production vendors, and installation partners throughout the design, fabrication, and installation process.
  • The flexibility to work fully on-site at Kith HQ in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with availability for nights, weekends, overnights, and out-of-market travel as required by project schedules and business needs.

Nice to Have Qualifications
  • Experience working in Figma.

  • Production-minded and solutions-oriented, with a strong understanding of fabrication processes and the ability to balance design intent with materials, budgets, timelines, installation requirements, and other production constraints.

Personal Characteristics
  • Collaborative and adaptable, thriving in cross-functional environments and receptive to feedback from internal teams, partners, vendors, and production stakeholders to continuously refine and elevate work
  • Proactive with a strong sense of ownership, taking pride in delivering high-quality work, solving problems, and seeing projects through from concept to execution.
