Summary
Join our dynamic team as a Plans Examiner where you'll play a vital role in ensuring the safety, compliance, and quality of construction projects within our communities. As a meticulous and detail-oriented professional, you will conduct thorough reviews of building and construction plans ensuring compliance with relevant building codes, ordinances, and regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of construction methods, materials, and structural design principles. The Plan Check Engineer will play a crucial role in maintaining safety standards and ensuring that all construction projects meet established codes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Review construction plans, specifications, and calculations for compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and other applicable standards.
2. Evaluate structural integrity, fire & life safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency of proposed building designs.
3. Assess mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to ensure functionality, efficiency, and compliance with relevant codes.
4. Communicate with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve plan deficiencies and provide technical guidance.
5. Prepare detailed reports outlining review findings, code violations, and recommended corrections.
6. Participate in meetings and consultations with internal staff and external stakeholders to discuss project requirements and review processes.
7. Stay updated on changes in building codes, regulations, and industry standards to ensure accurate plan assessments.
8. Collaborate with other departments, such as zoning and fire departments, to address interdisciplinary aspects of plan reviews.
9. Represent the department and interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders, fostering positive and cooperative working relationships and promoting a culture of compliance and safety.
10. Perform assigned duties within the supported agency's guidance, culture, and approach.
11. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Experience -Three years of increasingly responsible experience in structural design and/or plan checking or construction project management
- Education - Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in structural engineering, civil engineering, architecture or a closely related field.
- Possession of a certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Arizona. Licenses to be considered include the State of Arizona Civil PE License or Structural PE License.
*Consideration will be made for those who have passed the PE exam and have obtained Certification / License in other States.
- Certification as a Residential and Building Plans Examiner, as issued by the International Code Council, is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of building codes, zoning laws, and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication abilities, both written and verbal.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in using computer-aided design (CAD) software, Blue Beam Revu and other plan review tools.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to inspection sites as required.
