What does a product development process engineer do?

A Product Development Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the processes involved in developing new products from concept to production. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure products are developed efficiently, cost-effectively, and according to quality standards. Their role often includes analyzing workflows, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing best practices to streamline the product development lifecycle.

How does a product development process engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during new product launches?

Product Development Process Engineers play a vital role in bridging the gap between design, manufacturing, and quality teams during new product launches. They work closely with R&D, production, and supply chain teams to ensure that product designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet quality standards. This involves participating in design reviews, coordinating prototype builds, troubleshooting process issues, and implementing feedback from various stakeholders. Effective communication and project management skills are crucial, as these engineers often lead meetings and facilitate alignment across departments to keep the project on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Process Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, product lifecycle management, and process optimization, often backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, statistical analysis tools, and methodologies like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, project management abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and drive innovation. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality products efficiently while meeting business objectives and regulatory requirements.

Job description

Imagine engineering the sophisticated fluid, gas, and chemical delivery systems that form the lifeblood of the world's most advanced semiconductor fabrication facilities. At SSOE you will continuously expand your expertise by confronting diverse and complex process engineering challenges unique to the semiconductor and advanced high-tech industrial sectors. From designing ultra-pure water (UPW) systems that deliver water cleaner than any found in nature, to engineering specialty gas and chemical distribution networks with exacting purity and safety requirements, to developing robust hazardous wastewater treatment solutions, your work will be at the intersection of precision, safety, and innovation. You'll be supported by access to advanced training, leading design and analysis tools including hydraulic modeling and pipe stress software, and a collaborative multidisciplinary culture. We foster your ambition with clear pathways for career progression, whether your aspiration is technical leadership, project management, or becoming a revered subject matter expert in high-purity process systems. All of this unfolds within a truly integrated team environment that champions knowledge sharing, innovation, and technical excellence, backed by the stability and proven delivery of a well-established firm.

SSOE is seeking a Process Engineer to support the design and delivery of complex semiconductor and advanced technology facilities, with a focus on cleanroom environments, process chemical systems, and fab infrastructure. In this role, you will help develop safe, reliable, and code-compliant process piping and chemical distribution solutions that support high-purity manufacturing operations. You will collaborate closely with project managers, discipline leads, clients, equipment vendors, and contractors to define requirements, perform engineering calculations, coordinate interfaces, and support design reviews through construction administration and startup.

At SSOE, we donโ€™t just talk about the future, we build it. As a leader in industry AI adoption, we empower our team to work smarter by providing responsible access to the industry leading AI Large Language Models, vibe-coding platforms, and securely integrating advanced tools into every role. From day one, youโ€™ll receive the training and support needed to leverage AI as a core tool for enhancing productivity, sparking creativity, and streamlining complex workflows.

  • Develop and evaluate process chemical and specialty gas-related design concepts for semiconductor and advanced technology facilities, including cleanroom support systems, bulk chemical delivery, waste collection, and associated utility interfaces.
  • Perform engineering calculations, equipment sizing, pressure drop analyses, flow evaluations, and material compatibility reviews to support safe and efficient process system design.
  • Prepare and review process flow diagrams, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layouts, line sizing studies, and narrative descriptions that define system intent and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical, electrical, structural, architectural, controls, and fire protection teams to resolve spatial conflicts, utility tie-ins, access requirements, and operational constraints.
  • Ensure designs align with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, and design reviews to confirm scope, validate assumptions, and align deliverables with project goals, schedule, and budget.
  • Support vendor and equipment integration by reviewing datasheets, submittals, utility requirements, and connection details for process tools, chemical storage systems, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Apply QA/QC procedures to engineering deliverables, ensuring technical accuracy, code compliance, consistency across drawings and specifications, and adherence to SSOE standards.
  • Conduct site walks, field verifications, and punchlist support as needed to confirm existing conditions, assess installation progress, and support turnover planning.
  • Develop and maintain clear technical documentation, calculations, and correspondence that support multidisciplinary coordination and client communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify constructability, safety, operability, and maintainability concerns early in design and recommend practical solutions that reduce project risk and improve long-term performance.
  • Mentor junior staff when appropriate by sharing technical knowledge, reviewing work products, and reinforcing disciplined engineering practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3โ€“6 years of relevant experience in process engineering, preferably within a design-build or EPC environment.
  • Exposure to projects in semiconductor, advanced high-tech manufacturing, cleanroom, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Foundational knowledge in one or more of the following systems:
    • Ultrapure or high-purity water systems
    • Specialty gas and chemical distribution systems
    • Wastewater treatment systems (including solvent or acid systems)
    • Fluid transfer and pumping systems
    • Heat exchange systems
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations, develop technical narratives, and support process design from conceptual planning through construction administration.
  • Understanding of piping systems, including basic pressure drop and material selection considerations.
  • Familiarity with PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Experience coordinating with multiple disciplines and communicating effectively with clients, consultants, vendors, contractors, and internal project teams.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as SEMI or ASME B31.3.
  • Exposure to commissioning, startup, or field support activities.
