Product Development Process Engineer information

What does a product development process engineer do?

A Product Development Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the processes involved in developing new products from concept to production. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure products are developed efficiently, cost-effectively, and according to quality standards. Their role often includes analyzing workflows, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing best practices to streamline the product development lifecycle.

How does a product development process engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during new product launches?

Product Development Process Engineers play a vital role in bridging the gap between design, manufacturing, and quality teams during new product launches. They work closely with R&D, production, and supply chain teams to ensure that product designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet quality standards. This involves participating in design reviews, coordinating prototype builds, troubleshooting process issues, and implementing feedback from various stakeholders. Effective communication and project management skills are crucial, as these engineers often lead meetings and facilitate alignment across departments to keep the project on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Process Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, product lifecycle management, and process optimization, often backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, statistical analysis tools, and methodologies like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, project management abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and drive innovation. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality products efficiently while meeting business objectives and regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Product Development Process Engineer vs Product Design Engineer?

AspectProduct Development Process EngineerProduct Design Engineer
Primary FocusOptimizing manufacturing and development processesCreating and refining product designs
Skills & CertificationsProcess improvement, Six Sigma, engineering fundamentalsCAD, design software, engineering principles
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, R&D labs, cross-functional teamsDesign studios, R&D labs, collaboration with engineers
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, electronicsConsumer products, industrial design, electronics

While both roles are integral to product development, the Product Development Process Engineer primarily focuses on streamlining manufacturing and development processes to improve efficiency and quality. In contrast, the Product Design Engineer concentrates on creating and refining product designs. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the right career path or job focus within the product development cycle.

Job description

Product Development Process Engineer (PartTime)

Psionic, Inc. develops highprecision lidar sensors for autonomous systems. We value strong customer relationships, a diverse and dynamic work environment, and meaningful career growth for our employees. We are seeking a parttime Product Development Process Engineer to lead the development, integration, and rollout of CMMI Maturity Level 2 practices within our Engineering organization and align them with Psionic's established Stage Gate Product Development Process.

ย
Role Overview

Psionic is implementing Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) ML2 across its software development processes as part of a NASAsponsored contract. This role will drive the creation of a structured, compliant software qualification framework that closes existing process gaps, establishes an Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) approach, and supports progression toward NASA Class A/B qualification standards.

A key responsibility is translating CMMI policies, procedures, and artifacts into Psionic's Stage Gate Development Process, ensuring both frameworks operate cohesively across engineering disciplines.

ย
Primary Responsibilities

CMMI & Stage Gate Integration

  • Review Psionic's Stage Gate process and recommend modifications to ensure CMMI alignment.

  • Map CMMI documentation, workflows, and artifacts into the Stage Gate lifecycle.

  • Collaborate with Psionic's CMMI certification consultant to ensure compliance.

  • Conduct a comprehensive CMMI ML2 gap analysis across internal processes.

Process Development & Documentation

  • Develop Psionic's Organizational Software Development Process Procedure.

  • Create templates and plans including:

    • Software Development Plan

    • Software Assurance Plan

    • Verification & Validation Plan

    • Software Qualification Plan

  • Perform peer reviews of all developed documents.

  • Map and analyze the existing software development lifecycle to identify improvements.

  • Introduce foundational software engineering practices aligned with CMMI ML2.

Training & Team Enablement

  • Provide training on CMMI concepts, compliance expectations, and best practices.

  • Support weekly CMMI sprint meetings and maintain Confluence and Jira CMMI spaces.

CMMI Infrastructure & Automation

  • Develop an approach for AIdriven automation of CMMI workflows.

  • Create traceable, auditable documentation across software, mission assurance, V&V, and organizational processes.

  • Build an automated infrastructure roadmap to streamline implementation.

  • Design and test AI agents to automate process steps.

  • Train Psionic staff on the automated workflows.

  • Continuously refine internal processes to maintain alignment with CMMI principles.

  • Support preparation activities for the formal CMMI assessment.

ย
Education & Qualifications
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

  • Must be able to pass a preemployment background check.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering (Master's preferred).

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering process development and implementation; CMMI and Stage Gate experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
