Product Development Process Engineer information

What does a product development process engineer do?

A Product Development Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the processes involved in developing new products from concept to production. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure products are developed efficiently, cost-effectively, and according to quality standards. Their role often includes analyzing workflows, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing best practices to streamline the product development lifecycle.

How does a product development process engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during new product launches?

Product Development Process Engineers play a vital role in bridging the gap between design, manufacturing, and quality teams during new product launches. They work closely with R&D, production, and supply chain teams to ensure that product designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet quality standards. This involves participating in design reviews, coordinating prototype builds, troubleshooting process issues, and implementing feedback from various stakeholders. Effective communication and project management skills are crucial, as these engineers often lead meetings and facilitate alignment across departments to keep the project on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Process Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, product lifecycle management, and process optimization, often backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, statistical analysis tools, and methodologies like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, project management abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and drive innovation. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality products efficiently while meeting business objectives and regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Product Development Process Engineer vs Product Design Engineer?

AspectProduct Development Process EngineerProduct Design Engineer
Primary FocusOptimizing manufacturing and development processesCreating and refining product designs
Skills & CertificationsProcess improvement, Six Sigma, engineering fundamentalsCAD, design software, engineering principles
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, R&D labs, cross-functional teamsDesign studios, R&D labs, collaboration with engineers
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, electronicsConsumer products, industrial design, electronics

While both roles are integral to product development, the Product Development Process Engineer primarily focuses on streamlining manufacturing and development processes to improve efficiency and quality. In contrast, the Product Design Engineer concentrates on creating and refining product designs. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the right career path or job focus within the product development cycle.

Job description

Sion Power, the global leader in the development of a new generation of high-energy, rechargeable lithium batteries for portable power is currently searching for a Cell Assembly Process Engineer to be based at its research and development facility in Tucson, Arizona. Sion's exciting new technology package yields a battery system with the highest theoretical gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of any battery and offers significant improvements in performance over current rechargeable batteries.

Position Summary

The Cell Assembly Process Engineer will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a production process for large area cell assembly for Sion Power's proprietary lithium metal batteries. This position involves establishing and maintaining cell manufacturing processes on both the pilot and production scale for flat plate cell assembly using semi-automated and fully automated assembly tools. This will include stackers as well as cell packaging and electrolyte fill steps. The candidate must have solid experience in process development, manufacturing, supply chain control and quality procedures as well as troubleshooting and maintaining the process equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The candidate will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a cell assembly line to achieve production goals for both quantity and quality of product. This includes:
    • Analyzing process capabilities
    • Designing and performing process development, optimization, and validation experiments and activities
    • Characterizing and reducing manufacturing variation
    • Tracking and improving process yields
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop solutions to problems, improve product quality and consistency, and increase understanding of failure modes, performance, and life expectancy of cell products.
  • Create SOPs and machine recipes and define proper operation of equipment for cell assembly processes.
  • Report SPC metrics, yields, corrective actions, and improvement plans.
  • Define and perform equipment qualification/validation activities
  • Create and maintain cell assembly process documentation, such as Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis documents.
  • Train technicians in the operation and maintenance of the equipment within cell assembly process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field. Commensurate relevant work experience will be considered.
